Home Schooling advice/tutors in Battersea please

Postby Batterseamumof2 » Thu Jul 30, 2020 11:05 pm

Hello. Can anyone help advise me on the best way to home school my son who has just turned 4. He would have been going to school this coming September but I would like to home school him and would like to know the best way. Is their a good company to use? Any good tutors or home schooling groups in the Battersea Park area?

I have heard of Oxford Home Schooling but are there others? Not even sure if I need to use a company for a 4 year old, I'd be keener to find a home schooling group/tutor that can help me in the area if I can.

Thank you for any advice/pointers.

A hybrid homeschool typically operates more as a formal school. For two or three days per week, students come together to a building, attend classes with regular teachers, and have classmates, just as at a typical school. The rest of the week, the students work on their own at home.

Hi, I just wanted suggest that you can defer him for a year if he’s a summer baby.
That way you don’t have to worry about homeschooling for now and he still will be able to join school from scratch next year.
Reception is a very nice gentle way to easy children into school and going straight into year 1 can be quite a big change from home schooling.

I think that every mother must school her child by herself until he goes to school.

Hi, I know a lot about homeschooling and I have a degree in Education. You certainly don't need Oxford Tutors for a 4 year old. Do you have time to teach him yourself or are you working full time? At this age he would only need an hour a day at the most of what might be called formal learning, perhaps in two, three or four short sessions. A lot of learning should be done through play and talking together about the world while carrying out activities such as cooking, gardening, walking etc. There are homeschooling groups you can join on Facebook but probably the easiest way to get started is to buy some workbooks for reception (example links below). Also get some early reading books - Oxford reading tree are great but quite expensive as they are usually bought by schools. Children at this age learn at very different speeds and that is fine, try not to correct him too much if he makes mistakes particularly in his early attempts at writing - don't correct his spelling just be supportive and encouraging. He will be most motivated by working with you. Too much for one post!!

This is the UK government early years curriculum for Reception:

Literacy

Reading: children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

Writing: children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. They also write some irregular common words. They write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.

Mathematics

Numbers: children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
Shape, space and measures: children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

Understanding the world

People and communities: children talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of family members. They know that other children don’t always enjoy the same things, and are sensitive to this. They know about similarities and differences between themselves and others, and among families, communities and
traditions.

The world: children know about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things. They talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another. They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes. Technology: children recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes and schools. They select and use technology for particular purposes.

Expressive arts and design Exploring and using media and materials: children sing songs, make music and dance, and experiment with ways of changing them. They safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. Being imaginative: children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. They represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role-play and stories.

Thank you ever so much, Faybian for taking the time out to send me so much helpful info, I've made a note of all and I really appreciate it. I absolutely intend to homeschool my son myself, I work part-time from home so it's very achievable but I just wanted to make sure that I am enough and there's not something else that I should be looking at. Thank you Abbevilleteacher too and Muddyboots. All so helpful and appreciated as I am just starting out I just wanted to make sure I get off on the right foot and do the best for my son.
Andrewmane - thanks for your comment and I do intend to do it myself so no worries there.

I don't homeschool but have a Twinkl subscription. Their material is also used by teachers.

Hi Battersea Mum
I can definitely help, I’m in the Battersea Park area so we can work out strategies, just in case......
It might be a good idea to put some safety nets in place as things seem to change at a moments notice these days!
There is so much out there and loads of resources, many of which are used by us tutors and teachers including Twinkl but there is also quite a lot of useless stuff too and it can seem overwhelming and I’ve seen lots of parents waste a lot of money by unintentionally so it can be a good idea to get some support and always a good idea to ask for help.
Always happy to chat so you can message me or for my contacts at
LoveLearningCompanyCom.
I have been working with families as a support throughout all of this, homeschooling etc.
All best
Lorraine

Hi there,

I am a private language tutor with extensive experience in homeschooling tuition. I tutor English, French, Spanish and Italian. Please take a look at my website (under my signature) or please get in touch via my mobile number or email for more information. I would be happy to homeschool your child in any of these subjects.

Furthermore, and for the other subjects, Enjoy Education (www.enjoyeducation.co.uk) is a fantastic tutoring agency with whom I work closely. They often devise homeschooling timetables for various students and I'm sure would be more than happy to assist you in yours. If you'd like to speak to a specific contact here, I can put you in touch with one.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kindest regards,

Lucinda Williams
