Is Soho House coming to Balham?

Postby foodie » Sat Sep 19, 2020 5:38 pm

At supper last night I heard that Soho House was opening up in the old Foxlow site on Bedford Hill?

Does anyone know if this is true and if yes, is it going to be a full Soho House with memberships etc. or a restaurant like the Chicken Shop?

Exciting for Balham either way

Pre-2007, it was a restaurant called Balham Bar and Grill which was owned by Soho House group so they have history with the site.
They sold it on to the Rick Stein-backed venture called Harrison’s

It was open to anyone which a menu which is a bit like the one at High Road house.
The site isn’t nearly big enough for it to be a proper members-only place, surely?

It seems odd that hospitality stalwarts of Soho House, Rick Stein and Hawksmoor have all struggled to make the site work though. I wonder what the issue is!

Hi, I wanted to respond to the comment above wondering why the old Foxlow site hasn't been successful. That actually isn't true, all of them were extremely successful. Balham Kitchen was great and it produced many of the now senior managers in the Soho House comapny, when they were expanding, Balham Kitchen was relatively small once they started creating their string of amazing houses. Soho house owns the building and they leased to Harrisons - which Rick Stein had a share but was not that involved. This was very successful when they let Foxlow/Hawkesmoor take over and we were told by the manager there, that Balham was one of the most succesful restaurants of the lot, but was not bought as part of the deal. Soho house then applied for a music licence - but the Covid happened and it all went on hold. Whatever it is going to be now, I am sure it will be successful.

If that’s a successful site… wow

No one has been able to make it work, and now it’s been empty for a couple of years

Well unless you don’t need customers or tenants to be successful

So glad to see the post from last week as I've been meaning to reply similarly for ages. Yes the Balham Kitchen and Bar was hugely successful and run by some amazing Soho House staff. I had my wedding reception there in 2003. Upstairs was always open to the public but downstairs was private hire too although open to public when events not on. Harrison's also did very well with Rick himself making the occasional appearance. Don't know so much about the Foxlow era. I think what Soho House and Harrison's did well was make the front section very welcoming for a drop in drink or coffee. I assume the lease still owned by SH. The Chicken Shop also run by an excellent chef from the original Soho House. I do miss a Dirty Burger!

Soho House have a variety of formats now so it could be a Chicken Shop return although I think they've all gone now apart from one in North London. It could be a restaurant with bedrooms. Anyway, whatever it is, it'll be great to see those premises open again.

I lived very close, and they all closed down because no one went there. Continuously half empty and worse except for Friday/Saturday nights. The layout doesn’t help.

There’s a reason all these businesses closed down and it’s remained empty, and that reason isn’t what a great success they were

Soho itself is easy to get to from here on Northern Line. I suspect that has a lot to do with it!

Well we have our answer no and that answer is yes. Great to have a Cecconi's in Balham too. Think it will be like the Electric House in W11, part public, part private.

Well this is quite exciting for the area. Have been struck at how young Balham is actually and not just families here.
The Electric is fun and have good memories of it including bar upstairs. I hope it goes well!

I suspect it will be all public as it won't be any bigger than last time

Interesting choice on location. I’d understand if in Shoreditch, Dalston or even Brighton or Margate… but Balham?!

What’s the backstory on why the Group owns the building/ site? Did they know that one day the cool people of Shoreditch will settle down , move out and have babies??? 😂

@NVHusband yes that is exactly what happened. I know of several people who moved South once babies came along from those parts. Houses are more affordable and schools are good and travel to Soho very easy too. I worked in film.
Also there's lots of younger/ childless people who work in these industries in Balham and Tooting.
