Which London schools gave live lessons during lockdown?

Postby TBlake » Mon Sep 21, 2020 8:46 am

My children’s school gave no live lessons during lockdown and I am concerned at how much they are missing if we go into lockdown again. I have heard of some private schools outside London providing full timetables online so that the pupils log in to live lessons all day. Did any schools in London provide this - or even just live Maths and English lessons. The project based teaching with recorded videos was not clear enough or engaging enough so I ended up being the teacher most of the time which I am definately NOT qualified for.

Not sure how old your children are, but Eaton House the Manor gave full online lessons. My eldest was using Microsoft teams and zoom. All his lessons were live with the teacher and he loved it. They did an amazing job.

My son had full lessons at Emanuel. Log on at 8.30 and a usual timetable. I also know that Bolingbroke had lessons throughout too. Didn't hear great things about Graveney but only grapevine stuff so please don't take as a definite . Can't help with primary schools I'm afraid.

Bolingbroke had a full timetable for each year group from Day 1 of lockdown following the normal school day. Clear daily expectations, daily tutor sessions and 2/3 video lessons each day.  It really was exceptional.

Full on live lessons at Whitgift on teams. Plus exams and music tuition. My son never stepped.

I think most private schools moved their lessons online to be honest. My children are at The Roche and all their lessons moved online - live Maths, English, Science/Topic/PHSE, Art, Reasoning, Music, Story Time etc and assemblies and sports challenges plus extra work that could be done outside of the lessons. The whole day could have been filled if the parents had time to support it/the child was keen.

Am sure though that schools will be kept open even if everything else closes.

Finton had a brilliant on-line learning service with on-line lessons and smaller tutor groups

I hope that they are too but I'm not sure it is fair to ask teachers to travel and teach teenagers who don't show symptoms. I think it puts many of them at risk.

Thank you so much for your helpful replies. My children are in year 5 and 3 so it is really the older one I am concerned about.

We got our boys some online top up twice a week with SWLondonTutors.com, they're at Eaton House but we felt it was good to have a second opinion on what the school was doing basically.  They use bitpaper I think, we got an electric pen from Amazon for about £30 and they could write in real time so they found it fun. Hope this helps.

I understand your concerns, but I would strongly recommend asking what the school intends to do 'this time around' if your children are happy at school/you are otherwise satisfied. Our state primary didn't offer live lessons during the original lockdown, but will offer them going forward if required eg if a year group is self isolating.
