E & A Wates on Mitcham Road is closing down after 120 years. Their four floors of showrooms are jam packed with amazing high-end stuff - at sale prices - including lighting, furniture (sofas, tables, chairs), objet d’art, beautiful fabric, curtains, rugs and more.
It’s an ‘Everything Must Go’ closing down sale. There's an original 1930s burr walnut table and chairs and matching drinks cabinet going off to Bonham's auction house, open for bids from all, and an original metal Art Deco hall stand is up for grabs at the store.
The shop is closed because of lockdown, so many of the sale items are up on the company website and many more are going up this weekend. If anything is of interest best to call the shop and make a purchase that way: E & A Wates, 82-84 Mitcham Lane, Streatham, London SW16 6NR, tel 020 8769 2205 or have a look at their website www.eawates.com. Or just look in the window as you can see the ground floor showroom that way - maybe a good direction for this weekend's walk!
The site will be turned into homes sympathetic to the site so, for example, the old stable block - where the company kept the horses for the horse-drawn carriage for deliveries - will become a detached property, and the shopfront will turn back into two homes as it was originally.
