Colette closing on Northcote Road

Postby coffeeclub » Thu May 05, 2022 3:59 pm

Really sad news that after only six months of being on Northcote Road, Colette is closing their Northcote Road, Wimbledon and Fulham delis.

It's so tough out there for businesses at the moment.

Wonder what will fill their spot?

Entirely predictable given the prices they charge.  Why does everyone seem to think that people who live between the commons have money to burn - most people I know are asset rich but cash poor (well maybe not exactly poor, but not with the sort of disposable income shops like these assume).  It's the same with stupidly priced baby clothes shops - the one that used to be by the Breadstall (Sargeant?) charged ridiculous prices for gaudy kids outfits and soon went bust.

No doubt another pizza place or burger joint on the way  😪

Not necessarily true- places like Bailey & Sage also charge insane prices but they seem to be doing well….
It’s a shame, it was a really good addition to the street, my thinking is the location was wrong - being 2/3 blocks further down makes all the difference.

I’m sad to see any any shop on northcote sit empty but agree their prices were very high and there are already a number of deli/coffee shops serving the locality.

It would be great if COOK took it over, I miss the days of The Yard and Dandelion where you could pick up a simple supper on the way home!

Such a shame - but I always thought that they hadn’t quite nailed who they were trying to target. Their offering seemed a bit confused and I think they may have done well 10 years ago, but not in the days of deliveroo/Uber eats etc.

I wonder what will end up there as the rent on the property is astronomically high (as is all the rent on Northcote for businesses!) it’s a wonder any manage to survive!

What do we think Northcote Rd actually needs?
I think a dog groomers? Maybe a really good tapas place? No more opticians/optometrists or pizza joints!

I think it’s because the entire group had problems - they are closing all their branches . Sign of tough times for businesses given rates, footfall etc. Shame food was lovely .

It’s unsurprising giving the pricing. They were doing an afternoon tea to take away which worked out the same as going to one of the fancy places in town.

Shame as I loved the concept. I’d like a place that did a nice salad bar where you could get a healthy lunch when working from home or pick up a fresh dinner rather than a takeaway. Definitely no more pizza or Italian. What I’d love but probably a pipe dream is some sort of community cafe/space that makes Northcote a bit more accessible to different groups of people

I agree with PP saying their prices were way too high. A few times I was tempted to buy something but didn’t because even though I could afford it I just found it ridiculous and unjustified.

Orée for example is also expensive but just a tiny bit less, which makes all the difference.

As to what Northcote road needs… a Mexican restaurant, and one with high end cuisine (same range as Trinity, Chez Bruce, Sinabro).
An interior design studio?
I’d love to have a clothing store such as Gap or H&M for adults and kids but that doesn’t fit the road’s vibe.
I loved the home decor place that was behind the Breadstall some time ago, can’t remember how it was called, I was buying something there at least once a week.

I’d love to see The White Company / Little White Company (which might draw people down to that end of the road), COOK or a kids music shop. Not another coffee shop, bakery or Aesop-type gimmicky place, please!

Totally agree - COOK or White Company would be brilliant. The Mamahood did brilliantly when they had their pop up shop on Northcote Rd. Doubt they could afford the rent though.
As someone else said - no more fancy optometrists needed! Why are there so many of them in the area?!

How did Biscuiteers stay open for as like as it did? The biscuits were sooo expensive. Who was buying them? Were they really so much better than a McVitie’s??
