Want to help a child become a reader starting in September?

Postby greyingmum » Fri Jul 01, 2022 4:10 pm

The children's reading charity Coram Beanstalk is looking for new volunteers to become reading helpers ready to start in local SW11, SW8, SW12 & SW15 schools in September. Our training is online in short sessions and we have dates throughout the summer and beyond.

Reading helpers go into schools once or twice a week for an afternoon and work one-to-one with 3 children. It can be a fun and rewarding role that's so much more than just listening to children read. You'll be trained in a proven approach that gives children a positive reading experience involving reading to the child, book chat and book-based activities to reinforce their understanding, develop their vocabulary and help them discover the fun and pleasure reading can bring. We know that children who choose to read get the very best chances in life and that our approach not only raises attainment but also improves a child's confidence and self-esteem.

If you'd like to create readers with us please register your details here and we'll be in touch. And if you're not in a position to be able to give your time during the school day, perhaps you know someone else who could so do share our details.

Every child deserves the chance to become a reader and sadly there are still plenty of children leaving primary schools at lower than expected levels - often because, for all sorts of different reasons, they have simply missed out on this kind of individual book-focused attention.
