Are sustainable parenting groups a thing in SW London?

Postby Sustainable parenting » Sun Aug 07, 2022 8:16 am

Morning guys, Just wondering if anyone knows of any sustainability-focused parent groups around the area (we’re based between the commons but just generally looking the south west)?  My husband and I have been discussing the environmental impacts of having a baby so i've joined the community to understand what is happening out there. Although I’m new to this whole thing and have no idea where to start, I am keen to learn if any of you who have managed to link up to discuss environmentally conscious approaches to parenting. Thanks in advance! I look forward to hearing any thoughts. Suzette

You don’t need a group, it’s common sense!

Buy and borrow as much second hand stuff as you can (our local charity shops are amazing for children things)
Use biodegradable or washable nappies and wipes
Breastfeed and make your own baby food to avoid using single use plastics
Limit the number of children you have
Walk, cycle, enjoy the local area

@Sustainable Parenting - welcome and congrats on your news!

Agree with the suggestions by @this-is-cat but there are also a couple of groups based around the commons - friends of Clapham Common and friends of Wandsworth Common. Would be worth checking them out for things to get involved with.

Thank you @this_is_cat!

We definitely walk and cycle most places in reach but was more wondering on all the stuff you accumulate with a baby and how quickly they grow out of it.

Definitely going to buy second hand stuff but was also wondering are there any better platforms you use than ebay and Facebook marketplace? as that’s what I’ve heard from friends at the moment.

Thanks in advance!

The Fara kids shops are brilliant. We treat them as toy and clothes ‘libraries’ with a view to donating things back there as they are grown out of, which cuts down on clutter as well as allowing things to have a longer life

But eBay and the selling section of this website are good.

Also borrow or have as many hand me downs as you can get hold of, especially things like Moses baskets and playmats which are used for a very short but that is obviously dependent on you knowing people who have already had children

Hi there,

Love this post! I am a sustainable mum too and try to buy second hand, use less plastic and pass on to friends and families (or Little Village or Fara Kids).

I'm in the early stages of launching an eco brand directory - https://www.instagram.com/emeraldgreeneco/ which will vet brands and products and ensure that we are spending our money on companies who are doing right by us and the planet.

PM me as always happy to give and receive ideas to be more sustainable.
