Sydney living

Postby coolmum » Fri Aug 24, 2012 6:52 pm

Hi,

We're moving to Sydney next year and do would love to pick a few brains on family friendly areas to live which is not to far from the beach or CBD. Many thanks in advance.

Lucky you! Have you had a look at www.pomsinoz.com ? They have great forum boards with lots of the kind of information you are looking for. Good luck with your move.

Hi,

Manly beach is great and a great location. All the beaches are family friendly there so you can't go wrong really. Coogee has a section for kids and shallow sectioned off area on their beach. I loved living there so much. Bus ride from the city. Good luck! :)

I'd give the North Shore a try if I were you, more family friendly.

We have family over in Bronte, which is a gorgeous area and beachside. Their children are grown up though so couldnt comment on family frendliness for little ones, but definitely worth a look.

http://www.ellaslist.com.au - Friends in Sydney have found this website to be fantastic - it may give you an idea of which areas cater better for children.

Alternatively you could also post a comment on a friend's blog who lives in Sydney - http://www.lattemum.com - I'm sure you'll get a few replies from mums living there.

How exciting and amazing ...so jealous. Cremorne Point is a lovely beautiful family place on the north side of the bridge. Or Balmoral is right on the beach. If you are from UK and working in Sydney you get something called LAFA which means you pay your rent out of your gross salary so get more for your money. The North side of the bridge is fabulous and you get great views and get to go to CBD by a ten min ferry or over the Bridge. So fun have an amazing time!

Great advice from mungomuffit.
I'm an Aussie girl too - opposite to mungomuffit, my family lives in the south - Sutherland Shire - and I decamped to Glebe/Newtown ASAP too!
Beaches are good in "The Shire" and it is very family friendly but the commute to the city is about an hour from areas like Jannali and then the closer you get to the beach, the more like 1 hour 20-odd.
Everywhere is expensive though.
If we were going to move back to Sydney, my husband wants to be near a beach and walking distance to a pub.
That means, I think, Eastern Suburbs and at least a million Aussie dollars on the house. And a bus commute for him to the CBD.
Most people assume a minimum hour commute in Sydney - the distance is quite vast. Lots of people drive too.
