Working Parents! Need your advice please!

Postby SFMum » Thu Sep 22, 2016 10:35 am

**Long Post** Apologies!

I am in the process of going back to work currently job searching and interviewing. We are also in the process of settling our 19 month old in at nursery. At the moment the nursery only has availability 2 days a week and I think it will be difficult for either me or my husband to manage the drop off and pick up times when I begin working (8am-6pm).

For working parents how do you manage getting to nursery in time for the pick up? My husband works long hours and I will have a new job so I won't be too keen on leaving early. I was thinking of keeping my son in nursery either 1-2 days and we figure out the drop/pick up and then hiring a nanny for three days.

Is it harder to find a part time nanny than hiring full time?
Generally, how long did it take you to find a nanny?

Unless both parents are able to share drop-off and pick up (say one does the mornings and the other starts work early but picks up in the evening) then nurseries are tricky for working parents. A small number of nurseries offer extended hours (7.30am to 6.30pm) but that's not the majority.
A nanny on the other hand will give you the extended hours you need - but it comes at a price.
The other thing to consider is that if your child is sick you need to have back-up care as they will not be allowed to nursery until they no longer have temperature. Personally I used a nursery and it worked well for us - but from what you are saying it might be tricky for you.
All the best

Some people have one parent do the drop off and one do the pick up

Hiring a nanny for the short periods before and after nursery will be difficult
You would be better to choose a different nursery with hours that work for you
or a childminder
or a nanny full time

We had the same problem so we ended up putting our son at Clapham village because we could do drop off at 7.45. Not great and it's really not the best nursery.
As of January he moves to an afternoon nursery and we are going to pay an arm and leg because we will maintain the nanny during that time!!
Where are you based?

We are based in Putney. Very close to the river.

How did you find your nanny? Ideally, I would like to keep in nursery 1-2 days a week for socialisation.

She was recommended by a family member.
Shame we are quite far from each other. Definitely try to keep nursery! It's the best for kids development.
Some nurseries offer early drop offs? Have you tried discussing your issue with them? Or reaching out to other parents at the same nursery? I'm sure there are others in your situation

It's not at all difficult to find a nanny for say 3 or 4 days a week, if you are offering 3 full days. Many nannies these days have two or even three families they work for and fill the week that way. Finding a nanny for part days is much harder though.

Children get plenty of socialisation with a nanny especially once they are toddler age, there are so many playgroups and activities round here. And a nanny is a awful lot more convenient for working parents for so many reasons. But it does cost more!

Hi there, what about looking into a nanny share arrangement with similar age family? You may get the benefit of both the socialisation aspect of a nursery and the convenience of a nanny. Plus it may work out more cost effective than a nanny for 3 days plus nursery. I'm currently interviewing nannies for sole-charged role and am quite surprised the market rate has gone up to min £11 net per hour. The more experienced nannies all seem want at least £12 nph

Yes Putney nursery and preschool is from 7-7 so could work out for you. My daughter just started and we are very happy.

It might be worth asking in your prospective nursery if any of their staff would be willing to come to yours first thing and take your child to nursery or perhaps take him home to your house after nursery. I know some nursery staff do that to supplement their income. The nurseries wouldn't necessarily advocate it so it might be worth finding out on the grapevine if any of them do such a thing.

Gosh this is my favourite subject, when you don't have family support and living in such a big city when commute can be long it's a real juggling act.
My husband does drop off and I do pick up. But because of nursery closing times it means I have to leave work at 4.30. My boss is very supportive and I regularly decline meetings when they happen after 4 so really not a great option but that's what is working for us at the moment.
I guess it also depends how flexible your new job can be? But part time nanny seems like a good idea and gives you the flexibility that nursery can't give you. Good luck with the job search.

We are also in a similar situation and are looking for a nanny for two days whilst our son goes to nursery three days starting in November.

My husband will do morning drop offs and hopefully make it to the office for 9am whilst I will get to the office for 7:30 to be able to leave at 17:00 and pick up for 18:00. It will be a task but not sure what else we can do.

We have been using ********* to find nannies. No such luck yet but there is availability. Hope that helps & good luck!

I'd maybe consider an au pair? I'm not too sure, but then at least they could deal with the drop off and pick up times?
