General election - vote for staying in EU?

Postby Seb » Tue Apr 18, 2017 1:09 pm

Hi
There can't be many people who haven't seen there is a snap general election coming up.

I'd like to vote for a "stay" party but I'm not sure who that might be. I know it's a bit simplistic for a general election but if there was a party that would promise to try and keep us in EU I'd go for them.

However I don't know who that might be? I guess the Lib Dems is closest bet but does anyone know?

Thanks!

Is that even a possibility? I thought there was no turning back now that Article 55 has been signed?

I have no idea :-o

but I figured that a government with a majority could do pretty much anything.

But I may be wrong...

Hi
I 'tweeted' this at the local lib dems and this was the response...
With #GE2017 set to go, we are calling for a referendum on the deal that is negotiated. See http://www.libdems.org.uk/general-elect ... im-faarron … for more info

They obviously can, like go against the fixed term parliament Act, which was brought in by David Cameron to exactly prevent shinanigans like this. The most obvious explanation for this election is that the Conservatives know that they are not going to get Brexit finished by May 2020, so they are trying to get an extension until June 2022, with the hope that they will get it all done by then.

Of course art 50 is revocable, most lawyers agree on that point, and the European Commission has said as much.

The problem with this is that the LibDems are never going to get a majority (I think that even if everyone who voted 'remain' voted for them they still couldn't win - because of the way those votes are split up). Even if they got into a coalition government they would just throw their hands in the air and say they couldn't get their ideas adopted - re-run of Nick Clegg's promise on tuition fees.

I'm confused. Are Seb and Rooting4Tooting the same person? They must be, otherwise why start mirrored threads?

I don't think they are the same person. If you read the last sentence of rooting4tooting you understand that she/he thinks we should not post about politics on Nappyvalley.

Ok as far as I can gather it goes a bit like this. Is Article 50 reversible? Well the answer according to Donald Tusk is "probably"(!). The terms were left deliberately vague as they couldn't anticipate the circumstances that might occur if a state decided to leave.

At this point, in theory, if there was a change in Govt, let's say a hung Parliament where the Lib-Dems had the balance of power with the SNP. They could insist on a new referendum (either on the Brexit deal or a new one based on the inaccuracies of the campaign for example).

Assuming the referendum was a rejection of Brexit, the UK Govt, could then request to withdrawn Article 50, which would be put to all member countries. Then we would be back to pre-referendum status.

However.............................it all seems highly unlikely. Corbyn has struck the right note in trying to focus on domestic issues like the NHS and education where the Conservatives are in trouble. Labour are fighting for their lives in traditional working class areas in England where UKIP have a presence and throughout the whole of Scotland. Labour will not fight against Brexit where, I'm of the opinion, that Corbyn is a tacit supporter.

The Lib-Dems, does anyone see them taking seats in big numbers throughout the country? I just don't see it. A Richmond By-Election is one thing, a General Election another. UKIP will poll votes but not seats and nowhere near as many as the last election. All adds up to a big Conservative win, which will bolster May's position within the party and possibly avoid a hard Brexit.

Remember that depends on how hard the EU member states want to play too and I think very hard is the answer. There's no doubt that there is a significant grouping within the EU that would like to see the UK leave. These range from Federalists like Junkers to countries who see it as a once in a generation opportunity to cherry pick the City of London.

So in sum, unless there's an extension in the Article 50 timetable until the General Election after June 8th, I think we are leaving by one method or another.

Having said all that though, what do I know? I'm just a tennis coach ;)

Anyway us lot all need to vote Tory. That's because (ignoring the EU for a moment) Labour wants to introduce VAT on private school fees and raise taxes if you earn more than £70k (which many local people do).

The VAT on school fees would be a disaster - obviously for those who have to pay it - but ALSO for everybody else, because many people would be then priced out of private schools and our over subscribed state schools would just become more over-subscribed! I'm sure mansion tax (affecting our poky terraced "mansions") would not be far behind.

Back onto the EU. There is simply no point voting Lib Dem. Might as well not bother voting. Brexit is happening (even though we don't want it to), and can anybody seriously think Corbyn will do a better job of getting us out of this mess than May? So really Tory is the only option.
