Alarming personal safety incident in Balham

Postby staysafe » Tue Nov 07, 2017 11:38 am

I wanted to share this w you all as I’m 99% sure some guy tried to get me into his car earlier on. It was on Caistor Road in broad daylight and I’ve spoken to the police who are taking it seriously as had an earlier report. I wanted to warn you all about it, because I was so close to going with him.

A large black woman was bent over double outside Movers and Shapers appearing to be in a lot of pain and finding it hard to walk; I asked her if she was OK and offered to help her get home. It transpired she didn’t speak English and forgot where she lived, but we ended up crossing the road and went down Caistor Road as she was pointing in that direction. A car appeared whilst I was talking to her and this white, Polish/Russian(?) guy w glasses asked if all was OK. We chatted for about 5 mins about what to do, he offered to call the police and she was like no no way and she said she had no phone on her. She was sort of miming that she couldn’t explain where she lived, but could show me the way instead. I offered to walk her but the guy said she may remember if he drove her, I was bit surprised that he offered but genuinely was worried about her and figured he was too. She got in the car and he told me to get in as she wouldn’t feel safe alone with him; she had her hands together praying for me to get in too. Obvs that’s when the first alarm bells started ringing, but even then I was worried about her and can’t say I didn’t contemplate doing it (I KNOW - I’m a dumbass). I told him I had to make a call and he screwed up his face and tutted at me, but other than that his behaviour was just like a concerned citizen. He got back in the car - she appeared to have ‘found’ her phone as they were holding their phones together and he was pretending to call her last number dialled. I say ‘pretending’ because I was leaning in a bit explaining I had to get home to my child, whilst he was ‘dialling’ a number on his phone when I could see he had abs no service or network whatsoever. Anyway, I made my polite British excuses and left before talking it through w ---- and then calling the police.

Worrying if that has been reported more than once! I wonder if CCTV on the high street captured anything.

I think in a similar situation the best plan is to offer to or just call an ambulance, wait with them in a busy public place and then let the professionals handle it.

That is scary and weird. I wonder what their motive was because surely if they just wanted your phone/wallet they'd have done it there and then?

Really bizarre... she may have pretended not to have a phone because of a mistrust of the police. Why would they be pretending to call the last number dialled? Weird.
