Petition to inprove road safety outside Chestnut Grove School...

Postby TootSweep » Thu Feb 08, 2018 11:15 am

Hi all, could you take the time to sign this petition please?

There have been 4 incidents outside Chestnut Grove since last Spetember, and hopefully signing this will lead to safety improvements for our children :

I’m not one to get annoyed easily but this has annoyed me greatly. I drive up and down that road all the time at school leaving time and the problems are 100% due to the children’s behaviour. They behave like they own they road, they walk in the middle of it, ignore cars completely, ‘play’ push each other into the road. It’s shameful! Again, the buck stops with the parents- if they raise children who behave like this, no traffic calming measures in the world are going to help.

I’m not sure how many secondary schools you drive past on a regular basis Bunnypigeon but this sounds like normal teenage behaviour to me. There have been four accidents involving children which I would say is four too many. At the risk of being slammed down wouldn’t it be better if we could all be supportive of our local schools rather than jumping in to condemn them at every opportunity.

Actually I drive past a few secondary schools and I’ve never experienced behaviour like the one otside chestnut grove. So no, I think it would be better if we taught our children how to be civil rather than trying to put the blame and responsibility on other factors...

I disagree with Bunny
The C Grove kids are, in the main, well behaved on the way to and from school

Removing the clutter from outside the shops on C Grove and having someone supervise the crossing at Boundaries Rd would help everyone - school children and other pedestrians alike

But unless you know something we don’t Bunnypigeon I can’t see how you can blame some of the children for the accidents of four others. Unless you’re saying that all the children at Chestnut Grove are running around and jumping out at cars. They’re not really asking for anything excessive in the petition - just safety measures. There are a lot of children leaving school at the same time on quite congested pavements and parents are worried. I’m sure there are plenty of children who don’t run into the road and I’m sure there are plenty of impatient aggressive drivers who don’t help matters. Who exactly are they “blaming” here? They’re just asking for some simple safety measures. You seem to be blaming all the parents of Chestnut Grove children for not having taught their children to be civil - quite a sweeping statement I’d say.

I do think some of the demands being made in petition are a bit daft.

Removal of litter bins? That's just going to lead to loads more littering - already a huge problem in the area, mostly due to the children from the school.

A designated person to help them cross the road? I would hope that 11-16 year old could cross a road by themselves.

And that stretch of road already has two mini roundabouts in the space of a few feet so I'd also question whether traffic calming measures are needed.

I remember having a look at the plans for the recent redevelopment of Chestnut Grove.

The council wanted them to use Boundaries Road or Hearnville Road as the main entrance, partly due to road safety issues and pavement congestion on Chestnut Grove.

The school insisted on having the main entrance on Chestnut Grove.

Now we have this problem....

I drive past the school everyday and the stream of children coming out of the gates straight onto the road is ridiculous. I can see there is someone in charge trying to tell the children to stay on the pavement, but I worry every time I drive past there.
Would it not make sense to put a metal rail alongside the pavement so stop access immediate onto the toad?
I’m sure there’s one further down the road, would make sense to move it directly in front of school gates.

In general councils are removing railings as part of the shared spaces plan - gives car users a sense of peril and makes them slow down!

Hello, I'm the parent of a child at Chestnut Grove. I also live by the school. We are very concerned about this issue and speeding traffic. I have organised a speedwatch on Chestnut Grove. Unfortunately, the 20 mph limit is not adhered to once the roads are traffic light. It's not a road I can allow my 12 year old to cross on her own as the cars whizz down it. I'm terribly saddened to hear your post. My child and her friends certainly don't believe that they own the road. It's not really how 11 - 12 year olds approach the world. They simply want to get to school safely. I'm completely terrified of my child being hit by a speeding car as she walks home. We love our school and our children. I'd like to invite you to take this walk with us .one day to experience it from a pedestrian's perspective. It can feel very different. Building tolerance is the way forward for pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers to co-exist safely.

Hello, the road awareness of an 11 year old is significantly less evolved than with a 16 year old. The incidents have all been with Year 7, that first year having independence to walk to school, and cross busy roads alone. I walk there with my daughter each day, and thankfully we don't have to do Boundaries Road. Sometimes cars do stop at the roundabout to let children cross, but mainly they don't and the kids have to take their chances on seeing a gap. They want to get to school on time, as much as people want to get to work on time. The pavement is so narrow and there is so much foot traffic for the three schools in that space, plus the tube and shops. We'd specifically like the shops to keep the pavements clear, as the A boards cut the pavement in half.

I'm afraid road-narrowing measures on Boundaries is completely impractical. The section of Boundaries near the school is far too narrow for the amount of traffic that passes down it as it is, and during the day cars are parked nose to tail on both sides, leading to frequent queues of cars all beeping at each other because they can't pass or don't want to give way. Speed bumps would be a much better way of slowing the traffic.

With regards to pavement obstacles, I agree the A-signs could be removed but please, please no removal of litter bins. The gutters and pavements of Chestnut and Boundaries often look like open-plan litter bins themselves, and with no bins at all it would be ten times worse...

A Community Speedwatch with the police is being held on Wednesday 28th March (3-4.30pm) at Chestnut Grove

Shame that all the private schools will already be on holiday! But I'm guessing the council already knew this
