Immigration officers raid local restaurant

Postby muckyjeans » Fri Jun 15, 2018 11:07 pm

We witnessed a very shocking sight this evening in a well loved Northcote Rd restaurant. At a time when the restaurant was just getting busy with Friday evening trade , upward of 10 (really) large, body armoured police with immigration written on their backs barged in. One waited by the front side entrance in case of escapees. They took all staff to the back of the restaurant presumably for questioning and kept the only two non white ones for a full hour.
The staff were amazing, dealing with a very unpleasant situation in a calm and professional manner. I actually felt ashamed to be British, it was a disproportionate show of force and smacked of quota driven zeal. How have we got from London 2012 to this? We ‘let in’ oligarchs but not people who want to contribute and earn a living.
Can’t believe I’m posting something so political but it was depressing to see the kind of country we’re becoming, not what I voted for.

Having police raid and detain suspects is not a nice thing to witness in the middle of a restaurant whilst enjoying an ordinary night out.

But I'll just leave this here;

https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/m ... y-13514604

Surprises me that there is no critisism of the restaurant owner who must have known his employees had no legal work documents but still employed them.

I will wager he was not paying them the minimum wage (why should he?) in the case above all 20 workers were only given food and board in an overcrowded "doss-house" with 6 or 7 to a room and they were only "paid" sporadically in with tiny "pocket money" amounts.

Meanwhile the restaurant owner charges full price for their meals and retains a "respectful and profesional attitude".

Modern slavery is a real problem in the restaurant trade, personally I'm glad the authorities are taking action.

Please let us know the name of the restaurant - they should be named and shamed!

"Please let us know the name of the restaurant - they should be named and shamed!"

Might be a good idea to wait and see if anyone is guilty before risking damaging what may be an innocent restaurant ......

Immigration police must have been tipped-off. They don't go around randomly raiding restaurants.

Totally agree Chorister

Also there have been cases where te management have dilengently carried out pre-employmentt checks but have been presented with false documents - so I take your point

Also the management faces a £20,000 fine for each illegal worker found guilty

The hospitality sector has taken a battering since the referendum and restaurants are struggling to find staff. Many EU nationals are leaving, have you noticed?

Not really Star, in my experience of employing low or unskilled or differently skilled migrants, one has left, so definitely not "many". But that argument is irrelevant because this is about illegal immigration. Are you saying because we are getting out of the EU that we should open our borders to unvetted illegals? I know this is all hearsay because we don't know the facts, but in principle why would you be against the police doing their job and cracking down on illegal immigration?

We need to be tough on illegal immigrants and now employers face big fines, of upto £20000 per illegal (And possible jail).

It’s worth all businesses ensuring they have checked their employees

It is very simple.

The great and good of nappy valley have generally done very well as part of the EU. We are a rich country and have been able to offer migrants (legal and illegal) work at a lower rate than domestically born-and bred, and raise our own standards of living. This raised our currency and made lots of jobs in financial services on which all our nice Victorian homes and nanny's incomes depend upon.

This came at the expense of other parts of the country who had to live with the strong pound and a great many years of economic decline (anybody vhere visit Margate in 2011 and find the only shops were betting shops and charity shops?). Outside of Nappy-Valley, second home in Burgundy and posh regions such as the Cotswolds it is very dire. Visit Doncaster if you ever get a chance.

What has been happening is that those marginalised and experiencing decling living standards (folk so poor they will never be able to visit somewhere like Northcote Road eateries) have risen up and voiced their disapproval and immmigration became a big issue. Successive Home Office ministers felt compelled to act. People in Margate have votes ranking park-passu with those in Nappy Valley, you know. Brexit was the pinnacle of this ill feeling.

All of Britain wants a better standard of living.

There is a lot going on here, and I think we should all be cognisant that sitting in an eatery enjoying our borgeous lifestyles on Northcote road makes us very fortunate. And we should not be quick to judge the officers, restaurant owner, other diners, politicians workers or indeed the society we live in. Taking a look a ourselves would be a better start.

Sloaney Pony

Very, very well said, and brave too. And extend it to events in the common, which thousands enjoy at the occasional expense of people (like me) in our £ms houses. The clue is in the word 'common' - it means land held in common, for everyone.

I was kind of reeling when I wrote that post. In a post
Brexit vote, post Trump world where being anti immigration has become a vote winner, children are put in cages and Europe is having to bow to the right ( see Angela Merkel’s dilemma), it was just a stark illustration of a sea change in society. It felt like the 1970’s and as I sat watching many mixed race, mixed nationality couples walking down northcote Rd I felt glad that our kids are growing up in such a diverse city. Anti immigration is a fig leaf to racism and like it or not this country has prospered because of immigration. I don’t see the police bothering with the beggars all the way down St. John’s Rd, just those who are prepared to work for minimum wage to improve their lot.

There is a place for legal immigration, there is no place for illegal migration.

Illegal immigration is what the restaurant raid was all about, That is controlled by gangs and a world that most of us would never want to see. We need to rid our country of illegal immigrants and not take a wishy washy liberal approach to being nice to everyone.

This is ridiculous. You can't mix up legal and illegal immigration, plus throw in a few comments about Trump and children in cages for added measure! Nor should you accuse anyone who queries immigration of being a racist, because that is just so incredibly misguided. Sorry that the raid spoiled your night out, but the police really do have to respond to tip-offs about the evil underbelly of illegal immigration and every country expects to decide who comes and goes, not the traffickers.
