Local residents can be reassured that there is no problem at all with the water at the lake in King George’s Park, despite some misleading reports that have appeared mainly on social media in the past few days.
We first became aware of an issue on Monday morning when we realised that a swan rescuer had removed the swans from the lake without informing us and posted notices in the park saying they were concerned about the quality of the water.
Since then officials from the Government’s Environment Agency have visited the lake and say they have no such concerns. In addition we carried out our own routine water quality test three weeks ago and the results also came back clear. Obviously if there was any kind of problem we would take immediate steps to put it right.
We are aware that one cygnet has died. Sadly this does happen quite often in the natural world and is the reason why parent birds have so many offspring. There is no evidence at all to suggest this loss had anything to do with the lake. Another cygnet has some kind of physical injury and the belief is this may have been caused by a dog or potentially even a human.
We will of course continue to monitor water quality at the lake and are in contact with the rescuer to arrange a suitable time for the return of the swans.
