Mugged on doorstep SW11, be careful!

Postby ghpilates » Fri Jun 29, 2018 6:50 pm

Hi,

I just wanted to share my recent experience of being mugged in the local area.
Myself and my fiancée were walking along Battersea Rise on Thursday evening two weeks ago at 10.30pm, and turned into Eccles Road to get home.
Three large men attacked my boyfriend from behind, one with an arm around his neck and dragged him away. They were trying to get his watch off him but all I could see was three men attacking him for a sustained amount of time, and assumed they were beating or stabbing him.
I screamed and raised the alarm and people came out to help thank goodness. The police arrived too and despite getting statements from myself, my boyfriend, neighbours and others, when we checked with the police what their report was, they said no statements had been taken and they are not pursuing it.
While this is very disappointing, luckily my boyfriend was not badly hurt but we were both very shocked and shaken. This is the first time anything like this has ever happened to us in the 7 years we have lived in the area, and sadly I no longer feel safe in my neighbourhood.
The police say this kind of thing is happening more frequently in the area, so please everyone be vigilant and don't have any valuables on display.

I am so sorry this happened to you.

Can I just ask that you understood the police correctly and they’re really not taking further action?

That seems incredible for a violent crime.

Either way hope you are not shaken up for a long time - it sounds totally totally horrible for you.

I am so sorry this happened to you xxx
Same happened to my neighbour as she went into her house a couple of years ago a few roads up from you: bruised but ok. Police we’re just as ‘helpful’ then...
I got mugged by a moped last December. Not hurt but very shocked. Police never even came. Just got a crime number.
I don’t blame the police officers, their hands seem to be tied. But things have to change....

Hi ghpilates, I am so sorry to hear what happened to you and your boyfriend, I hope he is ok. I just wanted to say that this is the third similar attack I have heard about in as many weeks. Two weeks ago a man was mugged in Chatto Road for his watch just after 10pm and I think a week before that, another man outside Buona Sera at 7pm.. also for his watch. There seems to be a definite trend here. Maybe it is worth checking with the police if they are aware of those? On a personal note, it is getting out of control. I know the police are stretched and I am sympathetic to their constraints in what they can do (regarding chasing and knocking these thugs off their mopeds), but who is going to take responsibility for investigating these crimes? If nobody, then we really are living in a lawless city!

Gosh I’m so sorry to hear this and I hope you and your boyfriend are OK. There has been a lot of violent crime near us recently too. But seeing what you went through first-had sounds so scary.

Defo worth contacting your local MP. Our new Labour MP recently helped us contact our councillor to sort out a problem we were having locally with crime. Though the problem seems to be coming from the top. The government won’t fund the police adequately and as such they don’t have the resources they need to do what they need to do adequately.

I was recently pickpocketed in Lidl. An annoying but minor crime. I reported it online expecting nothing to happen.
I got phone calls, a statement taken at Wandsworth Nick, CCTV viewed, The police really went for it. I was pleasantly surprised.
If what you say is true, then raise a complaint. If you don't I cannot help but disbelieve you.

I'm sorry about your experience. It sounds terrifying. Have just emailed our MP.
@ rooting4tooting, may I ask which website you got a response to your report from? Just handy to know should the case ever arise, not that I want to tempt fate.

Thanks for your comments.
It does seem to be a police resource issue. We were taken aback that even though they had apprehended a potential suspect, and after speaking at length to myself, my boyfriend and my neighbour, that there was no record of a statement on the case. My boyfriend went to the police station to get a crime number and that is when they told him that. He then emailed them for an explanation and got this response, grammar entirely from the police's end! (I wanted to attach a screenshot of the email, but can't see how to do this):

Thank you for the mail
the crime has been assessed and at this time is shown as complete and screened OUT

These criminals know they can get away with it, and it is worrying if this kind of crime is not significant enough for police interest.

Makes me angry to read

One can see why some Americans are so keen on the second amendment after reading this. Whether one agrees with it or not.

Dear one and all,

While I too share the shocked outrage of mugging in the local area, i feel the matter is also major political one.

The fact is that incumbent government have as policies very skewed ones. The cuts to police numbers and their subsequent response to crime is just another statistic, but how safe do we feel? And how will these statistics affect our house prices in the area (not that such econmics matters in light of our sfaety). Ask yourself how you voted in these recent local elections, and whether you voted to change anything?

And its not just policing in the area thats suffered from wealthy-led policies over the last 40 years, its everything like NHS, schools, child-care - all in the name of mercantile values! We get the circumstances what we vote for!

House prices being affected? That made me laugh as it's surely not the most pressing aspect of this!

The issue is government funding of police. The numbers of officers is constantly being reduced and while I sympathise with this story of course, there are other crimes they are focusing on that are more dangerous, e.g. terrorism, rape, sexual assault, murder. The answer is more police - or why don't residents club together for CCTV cameras? I think it's always going to be an issue that if you live in a wealthy area you are a target... sad but true. Or maybe wear a more modest watch? Just saying...

Dear All,

I have reviewed the crime report mentioned above by ghpilates.

The report was closed because at this time there are no further lines of enquiry. Having read the report, the investigating officer states that there are no forensic opportunities and no CCTV footage. These are critical components to investigating a crime successfully, especially in circumstances such as these where the suspects are not known to the victims.

It is true that the investigating officer wrote in the crime report that no statements were taken from those at the scene at the time of reporting. However I feel it is worth clarifying here what may be a point of confusion: when you give a verbal account of an incident to police, that is not a statement. We take written statements from witnesses, where we ask for their account of an incident, take notes, and then write down an official statement on their behalf. The witness reviews this, confirms they are happy with the account we have taken on their behalf, and then signs the statement. If this did not take place when reporting then a statement was not officially taken at the time.

It is frustrating for police as well as victims when reports have to be closed unsolved, but this does not mean that a lead will not come up in future. Whenever new information comes to light which may lead to the identification and arrest of those responsible, we look into reopening and reinvestigating reports which were previously closed. So just because a report is closed for now, it does not mean that it could not be reopened later on down the line. For example, we often recover stolen property which, if identified, can be reunited with the rightful owner. In these cases it is vital that we have the full details of any items stolen, such as the watch in this report. With details such as the brand name, colour, specific model, value and serial number of the watch logged on the crime report, we may one day be able to trace it back to its lawful owner if recovered.

We are aware that there have been several robberies of valuable watches in the SW11 area recently. We do all we can to investigate these incidents, and the local neighbourhood teams are also aware, and will monitor the area during their patrols.

If you would like to speak to the local ward officers about your concerns and ask for crime prevention advice in the Northcote area, you can email them at SouthWestSWMailbox-.SNTNorthcote@met.police.uk
