Wimbledon Alert - Suspicious door to door fish sellers are at it again

Postby Pitterpat » Thu Nov 15, 2018 4:34 pm

Just to let all my local area know - those dodgy fish sellers are at it again.  I just had a guy in a white coat wandering down my road (off Dundonald Road) knocking on doors asking if we wanted to buy any fish.  I turned him down but then watched him saunter down the road to a couple more houses before hanging around outside my neighbour's house on the pavement.  He saw me looking at him through the bedroom window (obviously, not furtively) and he asked what I was doing.  I asked him where his vehicle was parked and (as the scam always seems to go), he said his mate was serving the next street.  I enquired where he was from and he said North Shields.  I asked if he had a card - he said that someone would be following on with some leaflets.  I asked if he could tell me the name of his company - he said "You'll find out when you get the leaflet".  I said I would still like to know but he refused to give it to me.  I then said that I suspected he was not a legitimate trader, because any reputable company would be happy to pass on their name.  He walked off.

BE WARNED!  These types of fish sellers usually palm you off with boxes of frozen stuff which, when defrosted, are off and not fit for consumption.  It happened to one of my neighbours a few years ago, and it seems that these guys are at it again!

Never engage with these chancers. One conversation and you are hooked !

One of my school friends at Cheltenham Ladies college was the illegitimate product of a vacuum cleaner salesman and a housewife. Talk about desperate!

You could say she was sucked in !

Take care,

Sloanster

We used to call our illegitimate friend ‘Henry the hoover’. She also had a big tubular red face and a big perpetual smile.

Ha! ... I've always suspected that goofy smile on Henry the Hoover!

But "Never engage" is a good maxim - also with those chancer "Knockers" that try and sell 10p dishcloths for £2.20 door-to-door

They are trained to keep you talking and wear you down - I got caught the other night by one and asked him straight away .. "Are you selling something?"   he ignored the question and answered with a load of misleading flim flam about "job creation schemes" (Rubbish!) Ex offender schemes (false!) etc etc  trying to be jokey and intimate... When I finally told him I don't buy at the door he went off in a huff muttering about ... "Wasting his time"!!!!!

I usually have a good look at who's at my door through a side window before opening but I was expecting someone and didn't take that precaution...followed by an "Oh ****" moment when I saw his black holdall that they all carry for their tat.

I shouldn't have said anything to him but "Sorry don''t want to waste your time but I NEVER buy anything at the door" - and closed the door sharpish ignoring his protests to "Just hear him out" :D

I just want to let you know that these fish sellers are back. I made a little bit of research and found out that they grow fish according to the method on https://petsoid.com/15-popular-saltwate ... beginners/. Eventually they froze it, then sell. The worst thing is that now they take advantage of the fact that everyone is isolated at home. I’m really sorry for old people who can’t physically get out of the house. On this period there is nobody who can take care of them. If these sellers will knock on their doors, there is a high probability the old people will be lured by their offers.

The door to door fish salesmen where here in Southfields today. One charming white haired guy with a small moustache claimed to be "Alan" and another larger chap who came into our house. They had a white unmarked van and no logos on their coats. They claimed to be T&D Fisheries from the NE. They sold us dodgy fish.

I have photos of them and their van (reg number GF60 NTA).

This also pertains to the other link on NVN:

Hopefully they aren't coming back to burgle our house!

This is not @NorthFish1510.

These guys just came to my door in Teddington. Normally I'm very good at my polite 'no thanks' with door sellers but somehow I got taken in by these guys. Don't know the name of the first guy but the second guy was rotund with a florid face and dot/cross tattoos on his knuckles called himself Alan. I was taken aback when after opening the door he just walked toward me at the door and with COVID I automatically walked backward to stay away from him and he followed me right in. I felt the quickest/safest thing to do was buy some fish to get rid of him. Feeling very stupid. The fish looks fine. I haven't opened it but with all these comments I think I will just throw it away. I've been given a bank account to pay the money into - it says 'T & D Fisheries' and been left with the fish. I don't want them coming back so although I'm now sure it's a scam I think I will just pay it and chalk it up to a learning experience :(
