Motorbike or Scooter insurance

Postby tiger1 » Sat Jan 05, 2019 3:25 pm

Has anyone recently successfully managed to get motorbike or scooter insurance for the SW11 area.

My husband has had a scooter for the last 9 years, but sold it and hasn't one since last June, but wants to get another one and now can't seem to get anyone to insure him due to on street parking.  He has a clean driving licence, no points.

Any insurance company recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

He hasn't tried comparethemarket.com or any of those sites yet.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there

On street insurance can be tricky for bikes but I managed to do it through Lexham so give them a try.

Similar to Richard-am in SW4 not 11 but last year my premium went up 50% (no claims made!) and when i shopped around very few would insure me other than at prices that were more than the worth of the bike! Spoke to a couple of insurers who said they were withdrawing from London market- particularly for people with CBT rather than full licence and scooters because of high rates of theft. There was an article in MCN i think saying that in 3 years there might be no insurers willing to cover in London. Add that to the ULEZ coming in and likely i will have to sell my bike soon as its just not as economical as it was, despite the convenience.

If its any use, i use CIA for mine and they have been fine despite the price hike. Buy something ugly, cheap and slow, insure it third party, chain it to a tree and hope....

My husband always uses the insurance compare services of MCN (Motorcycle News)

https://www.mcncompare.com

Since it specialises on 2 wheel vehicles he finds them the best..although Go Compare and Confused are also quite good

I use Bennett’s but my scooter is so crappy and old that I now only do third party fire and theft.

My premium quote for fully comprehensive last year was up by approximately 80%.

My husband insures his scooter with Aviva (after some shopping around).

Definitely Aviva.  We are unfortunate enough to have had two motorbikes stolen in the last 9 months.  First one was under an MCE insurance policy and I can categorically say that you should never touch them with a barge pole.  They took months to resolve the claim and deliberately held up every part of the claims process.  There are Facebook groups of dissatisfied customers bemoaning the whole process.

Second motorbike stolen 7 days ago under a new Aviva policy - totally different.  Constant communication, replacement bike already ordered and waiting for delivery.

It's bad enough being a victim off crime without dealing with a company like MCE.
