Furzedown Rec pavilion reopens after £110k upgrade

Postby Community Editor » Thu Oct 17, 2019 10:02 am

Schools, clubs, amenity groups and families living in Tooting can now hire a new-look community space that’s undergone a £110,000 facelift.

The newly-refurbished pavilion at the Furzedown Recreation Ground is now available for use by local people for a range of activities including children’s parties, local society meetings, homework clubs and other sports, educational and leisure uses.

The pavilion, which has been underused for some time, sits next to the old bowling green at this open space, known locally as the Furzedown Rec.

Funding for the pavilion’s upgrade has come from the Wandsworth Local Fund (WLF), which distributes money the council has levied on housing developers to help pay for community and neighbourhood infrastructure improvements in the borough.

Over the past three years around £7.5m in WLF money has been spent on local initiatives including schemes to support safer communities, employment opportunities for young people, better pavements and improved playgrounds.

The upgrade to the Furzedown Rec pavilion, which will be officially opened next week has been welcomed by groups in the area.

Both the council’s leisure and culture contractor Enable and the Friends of Furzedown Rec have recently canvassed opinion in the area and found that two nearby primary schools, three fitness groups and ten community groups are interested in hiring out the revamped pavilion.

Parks and open spaces spokesman Cllr Steffi Sutters said: “When we consulted on this idea last year local people were hugely in favour so I’m delighted we’ve been able to deliver a new community space that can be used for a whole range of recreational events, workshops and activities.

“It has brought back into community use a building and green space that has been largely inaccessible to the wider public for much of the last 30 years. Now it is a family friendly community hub that’s open to all.

“We hope it will be well-used by children, families, local groups, schools, clubs and the wider community.”

Local groups or residents who want to hire the pavilion should contact the Tooting Bec Athletics Track and Furzedown Recreation Sports Centre on 020 3959 0028 or email tast@enable.org.

Furzedown Rec is an attractive neighbourhood green space offering a well-equipped children’s playground, tennis courts, picnic tables, ball game areas and a small skateboard court. A young orchard offers a quiet shady spot for relaxation and a scattering of mature trees mark the boundaries.
