Nursery children design artwork for Battersea construction site hoarding

A group of Wandsworth children got the chance to draw pictures of diggers and workmen to be displayed on neighbouring construction site hoarding.

The kids from Fledglings Kindergarten designed the artwork which is now displayed on construction hoarding at Wates Residential’s Shuttleworth Road site in Wandsworth.

The national developer is currently working in partnership with Wandsworth Council to deliver 92 new affordable homes across two development sites at Shuttleworth Road and Stag House.

The nursery on Battersea High Street is opposite the Shuttleworth Road site.

Seeing their enthusiasm, Wates Residential invited the nursery to help design their perimeter hoarding.Pictures created by ten children were then transposed onto hoarding panels. These include builders wearing hard hats, machinery and diggers.

Sandra Prendergast, manager from Fledglings Kindergarten, said: “The children were so excited to draw pictures of the site and have them displayed on the hoarding, especially as some of their parents work within the construction industry.

"After the unveiling they spoke about it all day and were so delighted with the hard hats and vests that Wates Residential donated too." The children were given the opportunity to see their pictures for the first time on last week.

After seeing his picture unveiled, one child from the nursery, aged three, said: “I drew a blue digger because it is my favourite colour.”

Wates Residential was appointed to deliver the Shuttleworth Road development in July 2019. The work forms part of the council’s wider Winstanley and York Road Estates regeneration programme.
