New cafes and restaurants on Lavender Hill

Postby Community Editor » Tue Dec 17, 2019 12:09 pm

Local website, Lavender Hill for me has shared some much needed good news for Lavender Hill.

Lavender Hill has long needed a bakery, and it’s set to finally get one.  The last few weeks have seen a flurry of cafe, bar & restaurant development on Lavender Hill – starting with Sweet Smile,  which is set to be a bakery / Cafe / cake maker, and which (if all goes well) could be open within the week.

They’re not a new business, but this is their first high street branch – and there should be some Portuguese Custard Tarts in the offing.
A few doors down, the former “Delicious Chicken and Pizza” unit, which has been in use as a variety of takeaways in recent years, has had a very comprehensive overhaul, and is set to open as a rather smarter fish and chip restaurant, including seating for the first time.

Next up is The Fat Crab, who are opening their third branch in the unit that was previously Gastronhome, promising “The ultimate seafood experience”.  They currently have restaurants in Sutton and Harrow.  Fit-out is going swiftly, with a replacement terrace and a complete review of the interior – and it looks as though they may be up and running within a couple of weeks.

Nearer the centre of Lavender Hill, the former The Lavender is finally being refurbished after a whole year empty (the seasonal Christmas decorations on the window are the ones left from last year!).  The most recent reports are that this will be a Tapas restaurant.

Not an eatery, but Hamilton Dry Cleaners on the opposite corner has had the builders in too – with a major refit to get a much fresher look and make the interior layout a lot more efficient.

And towards the station – Heidi, a restaurant / bar with an extensive wine selection, are taking over the old Valentina unit (opposite Pizza Express).  It’ll be their second site (the fist one is in Balham), and they’ve recently have had their application for an alcohol license approved, so work should start soon.

Good news - the first of the bundle of new businesses on Lavender Hill has opened, and as expected it's the bakery, SweetSmile (at 31 Lavender Hill). Unlike the supermarket bakeries, they definitely know how to bake and are actually baking on site from the raw ingredients through the day (there's a serious bread oven out the back) - which means that the range varies from day to day.
It's clearly a locally owned business, and they're interested in what we want to see on sale - cakes?  pastries?  Proper bread loaves?  Sandwiches?  It's early days (there are plans to maybe also do light breakfasts on the weekends, and I understand that some of the comfy furniture for the seating area is still on order) but I've been especially impressed by their Portuguese custard tarts (which really are very fresh - it's rare to get them like that unless you go to the Madeira bakery in Vauxhall) and the apple tarts & sourdough.
Do drop in to say hello if you can, and spread the word too - as we've been needing a proper bakery in the Lavender Hill area for a while!
