Clapham Junction upgrade:station revamp, cycle paths and new homes on the way for Europe's busiest rail interchange

Clapham Junction is in the Evening Standard Homes & Property Section. Reported by David Spittles.

With Clapham Junction set to receive London’s next major railway station upgrade, the spotlight is shining on the surrounding district.

As well as a transformed station zone with housing and shops above the tracks, the wider regeneration goal is to stitch together neighbourhoods between Clapham Junction, the river and Wandsworth Common, all linked by green cycle and pedestrian routes.

Remarkably, the station remains Europe’s busiest rail interchange and is earmarked as a Crossrail 2 hub.

The station revamp will bring a welcome boost to the stubbornly ungentrified local centre, which in recent decades has lost what was left of its retail allure.About half of the 5,000 new homes planned will be part of a £1.4 billion neighbourhood on the site of bulldozed Winstanley and York Road council estates. This 26-acre swathe has been renamed as York Gardens and will have a new park and community facilities.

Junction House is the first phase of new private homes — 93 flats in a 19-storey tower with a concierge and communal roof terrace moments from the station.

Prices start at £675,000 rising to £845,000 for three-bedroom flats with large dual-aspect terrace. Call Taylor Wimpey on 020 3944 9428.

Housing association Peabody is redeveloping nearby St John’s Hill council estate into 599 new private and shared-ownership flats, available later this year.
