A new drive-in cinema experience is coming to London, reinvented for the coronavirus era.
The new @TheDriveIn will tour nationwide from July, parking up in London first before heading off to car parks across the country.
Running for 12 weeks across 11 cities, @TheDriveIn invites passengers to pull up for a host of drive-in experiences that extend way beyond the cinema.
The tour will swing by London twice, idling at a yet-to-be-named south London location from 2-5 July, and cruising into east London at the end of the tour, from 17-20 September.
Ahead of watching some of the world’s best-loved films on a top-of-the-range LED screen, with sound beamed to your car radio, audiences will get to enjoy stand-up comedy, bingo or a silent car disco.
@TheDriveIn, a new series from Mainstage Festivals, offers a much-needed escape for those missing outdoors entertainment post lockdown.
Films will range from 80s classics to blockbuster movies from the teenies and inbetweenies (that’s 2013-2019 and 2010-2012, in case you’re scratching your head), complete with a food delivery app serving American-style dishes and snacks via roller waiters.
‘Safe social-distancing practices come as standard, with food delivered to special boxes next to each car by your roller waiter’
Safe social-distancing practices come as standard, of course, with cars parked over two metres apart, entry via license plate checking (meaning no interaction between staff and guests), and food delivered to special boxes next to each car by your roller waiter. Plus, toilet facilities and strict hygiene measures will be in line with government guidelines.
There will be six shows per city, from family-friendly afternoons to late-night shows, so that everybody can get involved.
‘Our aim for @TheDriveIn to be an experience that brings real joy this summer and the perfect antidote to a post-lockdown world, and we promise to deliver it within a safe yet fun environment, said Alan Crofton, organiser of @TheDriveIn.
Tickets go on sale on Wednesday 27 May, starting from £35 per car. Sign up to the mailing list to be the first to know when the film line-up is confirmed.
Ticket holders will be eligible for a full refund if, for any reason, an event is cancelled, meaning you can book with confidence. Plus, 10 free tickets per screening will be available for NHS staff and care workers.
No car? Why not hire something swanky for the evening?
