Rubbish all over our green spaces

Postby Community Editor » Tue Jun 02, 2020 8:38 am

As more and more lockdown measures begin to ease, Londoners are spending a lot of time outside enjoying the sun in parks and commons across the capital.

Sadly, with this has come piles of litter left strewn across green spaces, leaving peaceful, pretty locations looking like overflowing rubbish bins.

If the bins are full, please take your rubbish home with you.

I completely agree. My husband went for an early run at the weekend and came home angry-of-Wandsworth at the state of the common and the hideous job facing the one poor lone council worker left to clear it all up.

I was up at the nets on Clapham Common with my son yesterday morning and had a chat with the guy who came to empty the bin nearby. His van was piled high and he said he was exhausted. On Sunday he'd had to do three separate rounds of his patch to pick up all the rubbish/empty the load. He said the commons at weekends look more like festivals than anything resembling social distancing.

We all love using the commons but everyone needs to play their part in clearing up after themselves. It's just common decency. I suspect those responsible might not read these pages though!
