More than 130 people join Wandsworth Stand Up To Racism’s first protest

Postby Community Editor » Thu Jul 09, 2020 8:50 am

Wandsworth Stand Up To Racism staged its first protest on Saturday in Battersea Park to demand justice for the Windrush generation.

More than 130 people attended, amid the global Black Lives Matter movement, which has encouraged everyone to challenge racism wherever we find it.

The Windrush scandal – and the ‘Hostile Environment’ that produced it – is seen as a particularly stark example of institutional racism here in Britain.

Speakers included Battersea MP Marsha de Cordova, cultural historian Patrick Vernon and Wandsworth and Merton Greater London Authority member, Labour’s Leonie Cooper.

Correction. I have been at all the 5 BLM protests on Tooting Common to date. There were around 130 people last Sunday 26th July but there were around 2,000 people on the first protest referred to above. The person is not only incorrect and giving a totally false impression but clearly wasn't at the 1st protest at all. Their figure of 130 people reflects the number of people who came to this Sunday's
BLM protest. The impression given as a result of the misinformation by your Community Editor is sloppy and offensive, if indicative of their attitude to the BLM movement and the thousands of people who have attended the BLM Tooting socially distanced protests on Tooting Common over the last 6 weeks.

Lazy reporters and racist attitudes/bias is exactly what BLM and other important local anti-racist organisations are fighting against. Shame on you.

Belzebub:  The post refers to Wandsworth Stand Up To Racism not BLM.  London News Online reported, with the same picture, that 130 people attended the first protest on Saturday 4 July.

You don't do your cause any favours by peddling inaccuracies - in fact someone might think you were either too lazy or too biased to do any research.

Thank you @belzebub and @chorister.

Yes, this was a Wandsworth Stand Up to Racism protest regarding the Windrush Scandal and indeed the story was in London News Online. We are not journalists here at NappyValleyNet, we scour the news every morning, aggregate it and bring you the top stories happening in our community in one place for your convenience. As far as we can, we always ensure they are from credible sources.

If you look through our site in 'Local News', you will see that we covered BLM protests in Nappy Valley / South West London.

I personally attended the BLM protest in Tooting Common on the 14th June and posted a short piece on our social media and site to reassure those who were considering attending that there was no violence from far right wing groups as seen in Central London at the time and that people were socially distancing. I explained in this piece that over 1000 people attended. I also notified people on this site and in our instagram account when peaceful protests were coming up.

I really am sorry that you found this piece offensive, I can see that you care passionately about the movement, but I can assure you that we do too. We have been very supportive both in our coverage on the forum and across our social media and in our sentiment and beliefs, and we as a team are deeply hurt by accusations of racism and bias.

Can I direct you towards some below pieces that we ran on this site and on our social media that may go some way to changing your feelings.

Yes, unfortunately, such actions are not news. All over the world, people are going to protest. All news write about it. Often in college we write papers on various social topics. To perform this task, I use a website that helps me write essays and other assignments. On this site I find free essays on topics such as racism, history and so on. It is necessary to fight for equal rights of each person and support him at any moment.
