A new cycle lane – and less car parking – on Lavender Hill

Postby Community Editor » Mon Aug 10, 2020 3:02 pm

Lavender Hill has always been a popular cycle route – thanks to bus lanes along most of its length that mean cyclists aren’t always dodging cars, and fairly wide lanes that mean it’s fairly safe. But there were several long gaps in the bus lanes, as well several parking bays (that only operated outside of peak travel hours) where cyclists had to steer out into the main traffic lane.

To makes cycling safer, these issues have now been resolved: a cycle lane has been added along many of the gaps , and the parking bays have been removed. Much more of the road now marked with double yellow lines; with single yellows in areas where shops will need to take deliveries.

Losing parking places is never popular, and will cause some concern for some traders on the street. That said, these ones were so ‘part time’ that they weren’t used heavily. The side streets remain open for parking for shoppers – almost all with modern and fully functional parking meters that take cards & contactless payments.

We have already noticed an increase in parking in Ashley Crescent, much of it being trades people who are using the (excellent) hardware & DIY store on the corner of Lavender Hill and Ashley Crescent.  Ashley Crescent is an important access road into the Shaftesbury Estate, and it is now very difficult to get in and out of that road safely.  It is causing a hazard on Lavender Hill where traffic gets backed up all the way into the bus lane.   Either parking needs to be reduced on Ashley Crescent so that traffic can flow safely, or alternative parking needs to be provided for users of the retailer outlets on Lavender Hill.
