Congratulations to Ella Terblanche and Amina Ibrahim who were both recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours at the weekend.

Ella is Principal Dietitian for Critical Care and was recognised for her services to dietetics and in particular her work during the pandemic.

Ella said: “This is a huge honour and such a surprise. I believe this award should also be viewed as recognition of all the dietitians, particularly those in critical care, who worked so hard to support the NHS and patients during the pandemic.

“Nutrition is such a vital part of a person’s treatment and recovery from coronavirus, and I’m hugely proud of the work all dietitians have done over the past six months to save lives and help get people back on their feet.”

Amina Ibrahim works as Operating Department Practitioner and was recognised for her charity work – she founded a charity that focuses on improving patient safety in Somaliland.

Amina told us: “I became interested in global health ever since I joined the St George’s paediatric team on their Nepal trip in 2012. Seeing firsthand what healthcare is like in other countries was an eye-opening experience.

“I left the Trust briefly for a period of five years to work abroad and learn more. I worked in the Unit Arabs Emirates, mentored students in Saudi Arabia and was part of the first Operation Smile team – a charity which provides free, safe surgery to children with clefts.

“Since returning to the UK and St George’s, I founded a charity that focuses on improving patient safety in Somaliland, East Africa through training the healthcare workforce over there. In addition to my role as an ODP at St George’s, I also spend my spare time teaching young people CPR and BLS for knife wounds.”

Well done to Ella and Amina!
