Work to improve the main shopping area in Southfields is progressing well, with the first phase of works along Replingham Road due to finish by Christmas.

The improvements aim to create a ‘village style’ local centre, improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists and make it easier to access via public transport.

The completed work includes:

- Improvements to the shop forecourts

- improvements to junctions to slow down traffic

- Repaving Replingham Road

- Tree planting

- New cycle stands

- Upgraded streetlamp

- New recessed parking bays

The next phase of work will start in early January and will include improvements to pavements and junctions in Wimbledon Park Road and new pavement and seating outside Southfields station. The whole project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.

The total cost will be around £1.6m. Some early funding came from Transport for London (TfL), but a subsequent grant was cancelled, so the majority of the money has come from the council via the Wandsworth Local Fund.

The council’s cabinet member for strategic planning and transport Cllr John Locker said: “I’m pleased to report that we’re seeing some real improvements to Southfields and that by the time the project ends it will be a more pleasant and safer place to shop.

“We will keep disruption down to a minimum over the festive period, and I would encourage shoppers to do their Christmas shopping in the local stores.”
