Petition launched as Lambeth set to approve commercial deal to cover part of Clap

Lambeth council are set to sign a 15 year lease with mini-golf chain ‘Putt in the Park,’ allowing them to cover large areas of common land with hardcore and artificial plastic grass.

The plans would see the old Bowling Greens – which are on on common land – being turned into a fake mini golf course as a commercial enterprise for financial gain.

Local group the Friends of Clapham Common are fighting the application and have also launched a petition here https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/ ... ham-common

They say:

There has been no public consultation or engagement with the community and the process through which vast areas of ‘open ground’ will be suffocated has remained wholly undisclosed.

Given that we are in the middle of a climate crisis and we have had a stern reminder just how precious our green spaces truly are, this is a tone deaf project that must not be allowed to proceed.

We are also suffering a major global pandemic brought about by our negligence and disrespect for the natural world so the need for change is urgent and we must act now!

The Friends of Clapham Common will be fighting the application for this project at every turn and we will keep you fully informed of the fight and the part you can play!
They also add that, “we should be planting trees not laying down plastic,” which is something we find hard to argue against.
