The council has published plans that will see lorries banned from trundling through a Tooting neighbourhood.
Earlier this year people living in the Fishponds Road area of Tooting voiced their support for a ban on heavy lorries using their residential area as a convenient cut through.
And following consultation the council will introduce a ban on lorries weighing more than 7.5 tonnes from entering a network of streets centred on Fishponds Road and bounded by Garratt Lane, Glenburnie Road, the Upper Tooting Road and Beechcroft Road.
The ban would apply 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all large lorries accessing the area. The only exceptions would be if a large vehicle had a legitimate reason to be there, such as making a genuine delivery to an address or a coach carrying pupils to and from one of the nearby schools. Refuse lorries and other essential vehicles like fire engines would not be affected.
The proposal, which will come into effect at the beginning of March 2021, was drawn up in the wake of a council investigation launched in response to feedback from local people who complained about the number of HGVs travelling past their front doors.
Transport spokesman Cllr John Locker said: “I think a lorry ban in this part of Tooting makes a lot of sense.
“Apart from making a genuine delivery, there is no need for big lorries to be accessing these streets, so as well as offering some peace and quiet to local residents, should make travel conditions in this part of Tooting better and safer for cyclists and pedestrians.”
