Residents and businesses are being warned to be on their guard against a pair of conmen believed to be operating door to door in Wandsworth and collecting cash for a bogus “charity skydive”.
Wandsworth council has received reports of two men wearing hi-viz jackets, and claiming to be refuse collectors, who are deceiving residents of cash by saying they are raising funds for a colleague who’s been diagnosed with cancer.
They claim they are about to take part in a charity skydive and request money from well-wishers on the spot, with reports suggesting they have been targeting kind-hearted residents in both Putney and Battersea.
However, it is a total scam and if anyone is approached by the men they are being urged to dial 999 and immediately call the police.
The borough’s waste contractor Serco has confirmed the men are not their employees and none of their staff are raising funds in this way.
