Hundreds of new Covid-19 infections are being confirmed in Wandsworth as the borough reports one of London's highest infection rates.

According to the latest data released by Public Health England (PHE) there were 398 new cases of coronavirus confirmed in the borough in the seven days to June 15.That was a rise of 62 or 18.5 per cent on the previous week's data, and reflected the spread of the highly infectious Delta variant of the virus.

It meant that Wandsworth reported an infection rate of cases per 100,000 people of 120.7, the second highest in London behind neighbouring Lambeth (128.2) according to the data.

Both were far higher than the UK-wide average rate of 85.1. On Friday (June 18), Wandsworth Council urged residents to continue Covid safety measures as they revealed that new infections were growing fastest among 18-30-year-olds.

"Coronavirus cases are still rising in Wandsworth – particularly amongst those aged 18-30. We are asking everyone to do what they can to help stop the spread of Coronavirus so we can avoid any further restrictions," a statement posted to the council website read.
