Council leader Ravi Govindia is backing a local campaign calling for buses in Putney High Street to be replaced with more eco-friendly electric or hydrogen powered versions.
One of the routes that could be upgraded with cleaner engines
Putney High Street has historically suffered poorer standards of air quality.
There are a number of factors behind this β including the lack of Thames river crossings in this part of south west London β exacerbated by the ongoing, long-standing and seemingly unending closure of Hammersmith Bridge.
The high street is also well served by buses and these have long been shown to have a negative effect on air quality in the area.
Some of the buses serving routes along the high street are still diesel-hybrid powered, prompting calls for them to be urgently replaced with cleaner-engined versions.
Cllr Govindia said: βThe council has taken a number of measures to improve air quality in this part of Putney, but buses remain a pressing issue when it comes to air quality. I am backing this new campaign urging the Mayor and TfL to replace these diesel-hybrids with electric or hydrogen powered buses.β
