From The Vogue Archive: When Naomi Campbell Interviewed Mayor Of London Sadiq Khan At City Hall

Postby Community Editor » Wed Jun 07, 2023 4:28 pm

When Edward Enninful assumed the helm of British Vogue in 2017, he promptly dispatched Naomi Campbell to interview fellow south Londoner Sadiq Khan for the December issue, his first as editor-in-chief.

Six years later, and not only is Khan still serving as Mayor of London, but the powerhouse Labour politician will seek a historic third term next year. Shedding insight into both his remarkable career and his devotion to combating the climate crisis?

His newly released memoir Breathe, which interweaves the personal (Khan was diagnosed with asthma at the age of 43, a condition linked to air pollution) and the political: London’s declaration of a climate emergency in 2018; the creation of the ultra-low emission zone a year later; and his future plans to further revolutionise public transport and introduce mass-tree-planting initiatives should he be re-elected.

For those feeling disheartened by the scale of the environmental crisis – and the lack of meaningful action on behalf of most political leaders – it’s a refreshing and galvanising call to action.
