Winterville - 15 November - 23 December - has revealed details of this year’s festive extravaganza.

The Christmas event, which will take over Clapham Common for five-and-a-half weeks this winter, will be home to everything from street food to immersive cinemas to Mexican wrestling.

Each attraction at Winterville is separately ticketed, with an advance purchases offering free entry to the Winterville site. Those without an advance ticket can still enter Winterville for a small fee, starting at £2 and going up to £5 at peak times (after 6pm on Fridays and Saturdays). On Tuesdays, entry is free.

It’s disappointing to see the location of this is yet again not on the fairground section. The common has still not recovered from 2017 and large parts of the common were fenced off for months. I would like to see some of the money re invested into the common. The playgrounds are a disgrace.
Last year we basically endured a drunken fairground for 6 weeks.

Why is this being advertised when it doesn't yet have planning permission? The Lambeth Planning Applications Committee is meeting tomorrow evening, Tuesday 9th October to discuss the application for an extended period (two weeks longer than last year).  I agree with Claphamconery above - this should be on the fairground site which is the appropriate place for it. The current application states that the mess left after last winters first Winterville won't happen again because it was caused by the weather and a lack of the right equipment...but their specialists report admits that even if everything goes perfectly the grass won't be OK to walk on again until April but any 'sports' should be kept off for longer. So that means we are all excluded from that lovely open space from 1 Nov to end April/May (6-7 months). But if we get the 'wrong kind of weather' then who knows...

Anyone who wants to can turn up at the meeting (7pm at the newly refurbished Lambeth Town Hall at the top of Acre Lane) to show by their presence that they care. There is no need to register or speak. I would urge anyone who has concerns about Winterville happening again on the grass area to come along and be seen so that the Councillors understand we do mind (even if you are a Wandsworth resident - all are welcome).

They are advertising because they know it will be a shoe in, no one cares about the local residents' objections. Certainly not Lambeth, the most corrupt London borough out there.

I liked the idea of Winterville but it really is a tacky funfair with very little else on offer. It should run for 2 weeks max and not on the grass section.

I have to agree about the state of the common, not only there but in general.  These events generate a lot of money but it doesn't seem to result in anything but a deterioration in the condition of the common itself.

The meeting was well attended and there was a long debate, but the planning application was approved as everyone predicted. Two councillors on the committee voted against - the rest seemed to take comfort from the organisers that the increased plastic matting to be used, when combined with using private contractors for the restitution work afterwards, would make the problems all go away.

What was really disappointing was that even with everything going "right" in terms of ground protection, weather and reseeding that large chunk of the Common will still be sectioned off for 5-6 months which is what is so unfair. This is stopping everyone using the space (when it is there for precisely that) so that a commercial operator can make a fortune from allowing a few who have the money to attend 5 weeks of a winter funfair/food festival. Warped view of what is fair and what right if you ask me. And the Common will get an estimated £60-70k of income from this (the rest goes into the general Lambeth pot) but of course that means that Lambeth then don't feel obliged to fund the parks service so well as they know they have money from events. Eventually we will be told we have to have the events in order to pay for basic maintenance!
