Wandsworth pupils first ever to visit the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education’s revamped library

Postby WandsworthPrep » Mon Dec 17, 2018 11:57 am

Four local pupils in Year 6 from Wandsworth Prep School have been the first ever group of primary school children to visit the refurbished library at the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education.

The CLPE (Centre for Literacy in Primary Education) has one of the largest primary school libraries for teachers with 23,000 children’s books in the library. The four children from Wandsworth Prep were able to meet with the centre’s librarian and take back recommendations of books for others at school.

Ann Lazim, the Literature and Library Development Manager at the CLPE, commented, “We were pleased to welcome four enthusiastic readers from Wandsworth Prep, who enjoyed the beautiful surroundings of our newly refurbished Literacy Library. We exchanged ideas about a range of books and it was great to hear that the children were taking back recommendations to share with others at school as well as adding to their personal reading lists.”

The four children chosen to visit the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education were the school’s Reading Leaders. The school’s Reading Leaders support the teachers who have the responsibility of English across the school. They are involved in the organisation of the library, organising various book events and carry out research from their own reading and from trips to libraries.

Mrs Jo Fife, Year 6 Class Teacher and the Middle and Upper School English Co-ordinator at Wandsworth Prep, accompanied the children to the library. She commented, “It was a fantastic opportunity for Wandsworth Prep Year 6 Reading Leaders to be the first pupils in the country to visit the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education’s new library. It was an especially special visit for one pupil who was able to see an illustration drawn on the wall by Chris Riddell – her favourite illustrator. I would like to thank the CLPE for this opportunity and the centre’s librarian for the wonderful recommendations.”
