Foodbank team up with RSPCA to support vulnerable pet owners

Postby Community Editor » Wed May 06, 2020 7:13 am

RSPCA in Wimbledon, Wandsworth, Sutton and Tooting have come together to form a RSPCA Pet Foodbank team with Wimbledon Foodbank.

The foodbank team plan to deliver pet food to those who are self-isolating during the outbreak.

Wimbledon Foodbank say they are currently providing three days of food packages for up to 150 people a day and estimate around 20% of those to be pet owners.

RSPCA Trustee of Wimbledon, Wandsworth and Sutton Branch, Ali Hellewell, said: “We know that this is a challenging time for everyone, and we hope to ease some of that pressure by teaming up with the Wimbledon Foodbank to provide pet food for the pet owners who are most in need.

"Even during a pandemic we are a nation of animal lovers and the Foodbank has seen people in difficult times who have chosen to feed their pets overfeeding themselves, which shows why this service is so important.

"We are working closely with Jon and the Foodbank network, to expand in various locations beyond South London over the next few weeks.”

Chair of the Wimbledon Foodbank, Jon Featherstone, said: “Ourselves and the RSPCA are keen to help people stay with their pets, who often provide emotional support through this difficult time."

Donations reached £315 out of the targeted £5000 at the time of publishing.
