Disneyland and Los Angeles - ideas and tips please

Postby juliantenniscoach » Sun Feb 23, 2020 4:29 pm

Hi there,

I've got enough air miles to get us out there for a very big trip.  My daughters will be 13 & 11 when we hope to go next October.  Obviously thinking about a couple of days or so at the theme parks so if anyone has any great ideas or top tips I'd love to hear about them.  Can be anything from negotiating parks to good places to stay, sports events or just about anything else.

Thanks very much,

Julian

How exciting for you and your family!  We went to Disneyland and Los Angeles about 10 years ago (my children are a bit older) so I’m sure that most of my hints and tips are out of date but I would highly recommend getting “The Unofficial Guide to Disneyland” on Amazon or from your local bookshop.  We found it to be incredibly helpful and it’s updated each year with independent information about where to stay (pros and cons), a restaurant guide, info about the theme parks and information about how to get the most out of your day (what time of day to go on rides or avoid certain rides, the different kinds of tickets available, when to book certain special attractions that might have limited tickets, etc).

If you will be at Disneyland over Halloween then they may have special evening trick or treat events (they did when we were there but you have to buy tickets waaaay in advance). Children wear costumes into the park at night and are given enormous amounts of sweets and chocolate from Disney characters as they walk around the park and there is a special fireworks display- my children loved it.

I think baseball season ends in September but if the Dodgers are playing any games in October then you should definitely try to get tickets- there is a fun, family atmosphere at the stadium and they often have special nights where they give children something Dodgers themed -a reusable cup or a keychain or a teddy bear with a Dodgers shirt.

Depending on how much time you have, I would recommend visiting the La Brea Tar Pits, shopping/eating at “The Grove” (a good place for “star spotting”) visiting the walk of fame and a day at Paradise Cove beach in Malibu.  Enjoy your holiday!

Thanks Goldhawk.

Does anyone have any thoughts about staying in the Disney complex for a couple of days as opposed to driving in from a base?  Manhatten beach is only 5, 6 miles away.

Thanks for your replies.  @Flightcentremark we have our travel sorted so it's just accommodation/attractions that we're missing.  We will be two families, 4 adults, 3 children 1 infant so not sure if a hotel or rental home would be better for us.
