How to prove vaccination status for a 12 year old?!

Postby mummybubble » Thu Oct 21, 2021 9:55 am

Can anyone work out how to show proof of vaccination status for a 12 year old for travel purposes? The NHS Covid pass (accessed through NHS app) can only be used by ages 16 and older (it won't let you set up an account as rejects it once you enter the date of birth).

The vaccination team say "ask your GP". The GP doesn't seem to know and can only print off a copy of the vaccination record which is hard to read and looks extremely 'unofficial' - it's just a print out and does not look like anything that will be accepted on a border/at an airport..

Options are proof of vaccination or a PCR. So we will get a PCR but there is an additional cost (and not everyone will be able to afford it). Seems like families still need to pay for a PCR (for travel to Europe) even though 12 y.o has been vaccinated.. This must be an issue for others with children aged 12-15 years?

Then we have a bigger problem for providing proof for much waited for trip to see family/grandparents in Oz - if no official proof of vaccination, need to quarantine for 14 days on arrival. And in any event they require 2 vaccinations of everyone over 12 years!

Has anyone found a solution to these issues? Many thanks, frustrated mum/ex-pat. x

I wouldn't be so concerned about a print out. The issue is more like how do you get a 12-15 year-old through two doses of vaccination? It seems that you can only book a first dose, and no one seems to know when they can get a second dose.

As far as I can see Germany, at least, requires two doses ("fully vaccinated" seems to mean two doses of the Pfizer vaccine, according to the EMA).

We have had exactly this issue. We were due to be travelling yesterday and we had to book PCR test for my son and he also needed another test on arrival at the airport and another on day 8, as they are treated the same as unvaccinated adults. Even if they have two vaccinations at some point there is no way to prove it, as you say GP doesn’t know and 119 doesn’t know either!

In the end for us he did a pcr and tested positive anyway so trip was cancelled! Couldn’t believe the timing!!

It’s a problem for all under 18s who have only had one jab - you’re not considered fully vaccinated unless you have had two so until the government hand out second jabs to teenagers (and as you say have some sort of proof) they will just have to use test results to travel abroad. I find it very frustrating how whenever I read a travel article about going abroad teenagers tend to be forgotten - it’s very hard to find out any information. If you come up with a solution please let us know!

I can only imagine/hope that it’s on the to-do list. Lots of people evidently will have this issue so surely it will be looked at?
We’re booked to go to Oz in April and currently we cannot bring my son on the plane as he has only had one shot (no option for PCR with Qantas). So we are very much hoping it will get resolved and he can get his second shot (and proof) before we go.

Hi
Same problem here for my two teenagers, couldn’t get anything done in the UK, thank god the French will convert the paperwork for vaccines done overseas into an EU certificate. They will only do it for French expats though, but worth looking if the OZ authorities would do something similar.
It’s been a god send for us as my two have now the w
European health passport so can travel, go to restaurants etc without testing each time (the have had one dose in France and one in the uk), as in Europe they offer two jabs to everyone who wants/can, from 12Y.

There are no plans to provide a second COVID vaccine for teenagers at present - this is at the recommendation of the JCVI, who weighed up the risks vs benefits.
The intention is to protect children from a disrupted education and to reduce the likelihood of transmission (by them) to more vulnerable people. The government isn’t primarily concerned about teenager’s own health risks as so few of them would experience severe illness.
Vaccinating to allow foreign travel for teenagers is not a priority. I suspect that pre travel testing will continue for some time to come.

We’re in exactly the same predicament. We are booked to go to finally see family in Oz next Easter and as it stands at the moment our son would have to quarantine on his own which of course is not an option! We are just really hoping that the Australian government will recognise single doses in teenagers by the time we go. At least with other countries taking a PCR is an option but unfortunately it is not with Australia. Surely this will have to be sorted out soon as it will prevent a lot of families heading out there.

The French government has a website that converts the UK documentation into a usable vaccination certificate with a QR code, you could try to see if Australia would do the same ?
Otherwise you could try and add your children to your nhs app as ‘linked profile’ so you have access to their records that way, it may show up in a usable format. I am trying to do so but there is a process to follow and I can’t guarantee it will work.

How annoying for you!

So a slight improvement for Oz but a 7 day home quarantine is still not ideal….

Yes not ideal but at least it’s something.
I have a feeling if they are quarantining at home for 7 days, it’s means everyone in the house also has to quarantine?? Not sure exactly.
