New York New York

Postby mummy2-3 » Tue Nov 05, 2013 10:30 pm

I am off to New York for a long weekend with a couple of friends next weekend, very excited as haven't been there for years, now trying to sort out a vague plan for whilst we there.

We are staying TriBeCa, looking for a good mix of sights, culture, shopping and of course eating and drinking, looking for recommendations of favourite places, things to do or general travel tips please.

All tips gratefully received- thanks

As you can probably tell from my "name" I'm from New York.
Below is the standard list I give to anyone heading to NYC. So far no complaints!

Have a great time.

Be sure to have a few bagels and a black and white cookie (here's a pic)

(the cookies are from the bagel places: a few rules they yes, I take this VERY seriously!)
1. should NOT be wrapped in plastic
2. the "black" part should be a nice deep, dark brown
3. should be slightly, but not too cake-y on the bottom - slightly bowed

Super casual brunch-breakfast-lunch: Silver Spur (Sign says "Grub") Houston and Thompson

Food: Best Sat/Sunday Brunch Dos Caminos on West Broadway and Houston. Mexican

Ideya: Sexy, Latin food. West Broadway at Grand I think. (East side of the street. Good mojitos) http://ideya.net/

Cafe Habana is also yummy cuban 17 Prince St., New York, NY 10012 at Elizabeth St.

Sandwich: Tiny's Giant Sandwhich Shop (Lower East Side) Rivington and Essex . http://www.tinysgiant.com/
Trust me on this one. It's worth it!

Fun, trendy dinner: Schiller's Liquer Bar (accross the street from Tiny's) http://www.schillersny.com/

Hamburgers: Rare on Bleeker and Carmine, The Coner Bistro (W. Village), NY Burger on 6th and 23rd (more fast foodish in style, but still delish for a quick lunch).

Be sure to have sushi (Haru is good,

and pizza n NYC, most places that aren't chains are great!

If you're up for it a great way to spend an afternoon is to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and go to Grimaldi's pizza in Brooklyn, it's right at the end of the bridge, you can ask anyone and they'll point you there.

Shopping; Soho and NoLita, Soho stands for South of Houston (Street)
Walk around Chinatown
NoLita is North of Little Italy, basically, East of Soho.

Uptown, Madison Ave and Fifth are the posh shops, starting around 57th street up to the late 70's.

Museum of the City of New York, http://www.mcny.org/ 1220 Fifth Avenue at 103rd St. 212.534.1672 Phone info@mcny.org E-mail

If you're feeling really adventurous, go to Staten Island (Ferry is free) and go to the Chinese Scholar's Garden. So nice.
Take the Circle Line on a nice day. Technically touristy, but I LOVE it, used to go all the time. http://www.circleline42.com/
