Baby milk abroad

Postby Mummymummymummy » Wed May 14, 2014 11:19 pm

Hi there, we're off Majorca soon, hurrah! However I'm confused about making up formula. My baby is on prescription milk, so buying ready made is not an option. Obviously we can't drink tap water in Majorca, but I assume I can boil it and make up formula as we would at home.

I know this is a stupid question, but I like to be sure :|

I am currently in Spain and yes we are doing the same as we do at home ie boiling water and using powder.

I'm sure boiling the tap water is will be fine. You can also buy bottled water if you are nervous? Some people are more sensitive than others to a change of water….

I personally never drink tap water in Mallorca so wouldn't want baby to. Whenever we go away I use boiled bottle water. You do have to be careful of mineral composition though. Evian is fine for babies not sure if it will be stocked in Mallorca though might be worth taking a label or bottle out to find water with similar composition. My baby was very sensitive to water changes so I'd use evian when visiting grandparents in Wales to avoid diarrhoea & terrible nappy rash. Have a wonderful time.

We've been to Majorca and Canaries and the best thing is they sell bottled water for babies/formula. It is in all supermarkets and has a picture of a baby on the label. This means it is low in sodium. You can use straight from bottle or boil if you want. Also adults can drink so only one you need to buy.

Have a fab holiday.

Hello there,

Thank you for bringing this topic up. We are going away in August and I hadn't even thought about this yet. I doubt I will be able to find Aptamil when in Italy so are you allowed to bring 2 x huge tubs through the airport? What if our hotel don't have kettles - do you just boil the water in a pan? So, you shouldn't use tap water and buy Evian? Are these all the things I must consider please?

Many thanks for your kind help.

It's called Milupa in Europe and available in supermarkets and pharmacies. When I ran out in Tenerife and the shop didn't stock it I used SMA powder and all was fine.

Great thank you. I've never even used anything else so not sure if baby will take to a different brand - argh!

Hi

Just wanted to add that I have boiled tap water in Mallorca to make tea and the taste was absolutely vile so imagine that there might be a similar problem making formula.

In France and Spain Evian and some other low sodium bottled waters have a picture of a baby on the label to let you know that it is safe to use - I use to use it straight from the bottle ( didn't re-boil).

Re Italy: You can buy Aptamil in Italy (it is called Aptamil and the packaging is the same as in the UK), but it is much more expensive than in the UK. I have paid €17 to €24 for a tub depending on where I have bought it (pharmacies stock it more consistently than supermarkets but are more expensive), so if you can take it with you, you may wish to consider this.

Lots of people use San Gemini or Acqua Panna in Italy, but any mineral water which says "può essere utilizzata per la preparazione degli alimenti dei lattanti" (being the wording set out in statute) on the label should be fine.
