Ski holiday recommendations?

Postby 2boysmum » Tue May 05, 2015 9:10 am

Hi, we've been using mark Warner for ski holidays for 8 years and now that our kids aren't teeny tiny any more it's time to move on. It did what it said on the tin, and they have been great but the hotels are all a bit tired and grotty.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good ski hotels, chalets or companies? Anywhere you have stayed before?? We still need access to nannies for ski school drop offs and pick ups and for the little one who is still to young to ski a full day. We are open to fully catered chalets or hotels, or even self catering where we can use a separate nanny company. Near to slopes is always great...and not too low in case it's a rubbish season.
Would love to hear any recommendations.
Many thanks

VIP Ski - amazing chalets (and 2 bigger kind of chalet hotels - not Mark Warner Size, but up to 30 ish bedrooms) They have great nannies and so you have the whole package - if you want near to slopes and high, check out their stuff in Plagne Centre - we were there in April and it was great, and the previous year we were in the big hotel in St Anton, great too.

Call the office - the people on the phones in there have all seen pretty much all the chalets and can tell you exactly what will work for your group / family.

If you are happy with nanny agency (Merinannies) check out Purple Ski, Ski Cuisine or Alpine Action in Meribel - all nice properties.

Highly recommend Scott Dunn. More luxurious and still caters for kids - but not with the intensity of Mark Warner/Esprit in our experience. They have a huge range of chalets and hotels to choose from and the quality of accommodation is much better than Mark Warner!

Depending on budget Powder Byrne are also amazing and I also second VIP for a more reasonable budget !

I would stay well away from Crystal Holidays - we used them last year and they were a disaster !!! Horrible flights (we flew Air Nicky?!) and the week before we left they moved our flight from a 9am departure to a 6am departure - laving home at 3am with young kids was not a nice way to start a holiday. And I thought it was really expensive for what we got.

I am a huge fan of Austria. Obergurgl is great with kids !

If you don't mind a bit of DIY on your holiday, then we would highly recommend going to Serfaus in Austria. In case you are worried, they speak amazing English so no problems to get around. The whole resort (or actually 3 towns next to each other, Serfsaus-Fiss-Ladis) are geared towards family ski holidays.

If you don't want to DIY, you can go for a kinder hotel. We didn't want to pay their prices, so we booked flights and car ourselves and booked ourselves into hotel Geiger. Can highly recommend, very reasonably priced, a swimming pool (heated indoor and outdoor, which the whole family loved - our 1 year old a time), a very small play room and a bit of a table football etc for the older kids. The nursery in Serfaus is outstanding and next to the slopes, the town is all connected by the underground (not kidding you) so you don't even have to walk. There are also other self-catering options available if you are after renting an apartment.

I recommend flying to Innsbruck.

This being Austria, the rooms are always super clean, the infrastructure outstanding and the service with a smile (unlike France, in my opinion).

The only downside is there are no other Brits there, if socialising with other families is what you are after (there are a lot of Germans, Austrians, Dutch...)

Our little one was too small for skiing but they have this setup where they do partial skiing and partial activities / nursery. I think Fiss is the best resort for that (they are all really close to each other but you would have to drive from one to the other). The nursery (or nurseries, because each resort has one) also take kids from a young age.

We absolutely loved it there and will definitely be back. Highly recommended and a hidden gem!

we've been skiing with meriski for about 10 years now - excellent chalets, amazing food (and we are pretty fussy!), nannies are brilliant, driver service included etc etc. our kids are 6 and 4, and meriski have sorted everything brilliantly for us.
we are looking for a family or two families to join us in a chalet with a gorgeous outdoor hot tub that we've already booked for the february half term....if you fancy it? we are friendly and can promise good dinner conversation!!

Hi all,

I am a local mum and independent travel agent with 13 years of experience in the ski industry.

All of the companies mentioned above are brilliant and I work with them all. I also work with a range of smaller, independent owners and operators. Don't hesitate to drop me a line on julia@summersandwinters.co.uk if you would like any suggestions. My website is www.summersandwinters.co.uk

My service is totally free and you pay the same price (or less than you would booking directly). Also with a family of my own, I understand the concerns and requirements of family skiing a bit more than the sales girls in the offices at VIP etc!

I offer everything from uber luxurious properties for large groups to a couple staying in a hotel for the weekend. Don't be put off by the website, the swanky chalets look best online, but I have a massive range of contacts.

Do get in touch if you would like any help or advice.

We had a brilliant ski holiday in Plein Pleisey with Ski Beat - they didn't cost the earth and we had a private nanny (from Ski Beat) who was absolutely amazing - she was the equivalent of a Norland nanny and we had total trust in her from the very start which was important when you want to enjoy your skiing holiday.
We were two families (3 yr, 5 yr, 6 yr, 8 yrs) They all skied and when the older ones went up the mountain the nanny stayed down in the snow park (ESF) with the 3 yr old. They also were taken back to the chalet after morning ski school for lunch and a bit of chilling time and then were taken on tobaganning trips, bubble car trips etc so they were kept busy.
The chalet girl then made tea for them - the nanny would leave at about 5pm. one night babysitting was also included.
The chalets were nice (not total luxury) but all had ensuites and balcony. The food was good too. Highly recommend ..
