How can I get my husband to give up smoking?

Postby oneandonemakethree » Thu Jan 06, 2022 8:57 pm

Can anyone advise me how I can get my husband to give up smoking.

He's smoked since he went off to uni ( he's now 45) but stopped when he had a health scare a few years ago but I've recently discovered that he's secretly smoking again. I am absolutely distraught, cross, worried and more.

In an outpouring of guilt he confessed that the various stresses of the last year meant that he had started up again. He promised to make it a New Year resolution to stop but I'm not sure that he has ....I'm not sure how best to handle it.

Is there anyone out there with any tips/ideas etc? I'm not sure that my constant pleading or highlighting the health risks will work but his parents don't know and I am wondering if outing him to them or using the threat as leverage would work? He obviously knows what he's doing to himself...

Allan Carr’s EasyWay course is in Raynes park and is THE best way to quit!! There’s groupon vouchers for £150 at the moment otherwise it’s £299 but it works after one day session and is sooo easy!! Literally job done!!

Nicotine patches were the thing that helped me stop smoking and I’d been smoking at least 20 a day for over 30 years. I used the strongest ones and kept the previous day’s one on so I had two on at the same time. I used them for 10 months (having moved down to a lower dose towards the end) and have never smoked since. That was 12 years ago.
I found the fact that I was getting a constant supply of nicotine into my system took away any desire to smoke.

Several years ago after I had firmly quit a serious Marlboro habit I had a crisis that started me on the slippy slope to being a professional smoker again - something I was deeply disgusted by but couldn’t quit again. Next week became next month which became the next school holiday and so on.
Finally I sought help from my GP (Thurleigh Road Practice) and was enrolled on their quit smoking clinic. A complete sceptic I nevertheless went along. In my first session I was given Champix and after literally 1 tablet I never smoked again and that was 9 years ago. The morning after my appointment I lit my 6 am cigarette and put it out halfway through.
I couldn’t quite believe this and to this day it amazes me given I was so gripped by the addiction.

About 20 years ago I attended an Alan Carr course at Raynes Park having been a cigarette smoker for more decades than I cared to remember. After a four hour session, I walked away and have never smoked another cigarette since. Very clever technique as they concentrate on the 'benefits' of not smoking ....not all the doom and gloom stuff.... it worked for me!
