First appointment with fertility consultant - what happens?

Postby willma_86 » Wed Oct 14, 2015 9:43 am

I have my first appointment with tarek el toukhy in a few weeks time. It's a consultation with scan.

I'm a bit nervous about going and I wondered if anyone has seen him, or if anyone has been to a similar appointment recently with another consultant - what do they discuss / do in this initial appointment? And what is the scan like - is it an ultrasound?

Sorry for all the questions, would love to hear from someone who has been here before!

It will most likely be a transvaginal scan. A camera on the end of what looks like a dildo so he can see your uterus lining and ovaries.

It's not painful.

Good luck

Ah Tarek!

I had twins and a singleton through Tarek. Amazing man and can highly recommend!

Don't be put off by it being a man doing the scans as he's amazing. I paid additional so he did all of my scans, blood tests etc.

Have 2 little frozen ones so who knows I may be back again!

That's so great to hear! Thanks for that. I'm kind of looking forward to just doing something about it, although I don't feel I'm ready to even be thinking about IVF etc. I've got my fingers crossed he'll just put my mind at rest...

I have no experience of this Dr, but I went for fertility investigations last year (at 92 Harley St with Dr Rehan Salim) as wasn't conceiving (despite having 1 child already). I was told I had a thin endometrium which would prevent an egg implanting. This was detected in the scan and I had surgery the month later, took progesterone after ovulating and conceived shortly after. I am due my second child end of this month. So, you may not need IVF anyway but the main thing is that you're being seen by an expert. Good luck!

Congrats on #2! That's really reasurring that not every visit to a specialist has to go down the IVF route... Best just to find out I think. Also one other question to anyone who's been through this - does it matter what day in your cycle you have your scan? I'm seeing him on day 21 and I'm worried that if I happened to be pregnant, could a scan damage it at all??

Nope, I had an early scan to work out how far along I was (3 weeks or 7 weeks) and that was a transvaginal scan.... its common practise and won't hurt anything! I turned out to be 7 weeks.... was a bit of a surprise!!
