Post chemo shampoo recommendations please

Postby supergirl » Thu Jan 07, 2016 1:17 pm

Hello Ladies

I am 6 months in having finished my chemotherapy (yippee!) and my hair have grown back and are thick which is great but they have gone quite dry - They weren't before.

Can anyone who has experienced it can recommend a good shampoo/mask for hair?

Many thanks, I would very grateful. Sx

Congrats!

We'll mention this in weekly email to get some replies for you (and I'll also ask some friends who've used the same!).

When my mother-in-law was undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy we were recommended Philip Kingsley's No Colour No Scent range. Both the shampoo and conditioner did seem to be very moisturising without being greasy. I also found his website to be quite good and informative.
Congratulations on coming through chemo
All the best x

Hi Supergirl.

Congratulations for finishing chemo'. Usually your hair goes through different texture phases as your hormones rebalance. Mine went through baby fluff to hedgehog and back again over a period of about 6 months. I imagine there is some difference between male and female though.

I found my scalp quite sensitive for a long time so I started with shampoo specifically for babies. I used Johnson's and it worked for me but it was over 10 years now so there will be something better on the market now.

Best wishes,

Julian

Thank you a lot for the suggestions so far, i ll try them.

Please keep the recommendations coming as i m really keen to find the right one for me.

@MillyMoo: thank you very for your kind words, they went straight to my heart.

@Julian: thank you for the suggestion, i am currently washing my hair with a shampoo similar to Jonson. I am more asking for a proper "treatment" in order to i dont know... Make them better if that makes sense?
You re probably like my husband and not getting how a woman feels about her hair! (i mean that in a nice way and i say it jokingly honest!).

No I totally get how a woman feels about her hair honest. My mum's biggest dread was losing her hair during chemo, probably worse than the actual treatment itself believe it or not.

Good luck with it all!

My friend started her own hair and skincare business after intensive treatment for leukaemia, during which she was frustrated by the lack of products for people having chemo. She still has a smallish range if products, but they are really good and all made from organic or natural ingredients.

Hi there,

Not about shampoo, but if you need any emotional support after your treatment with a view to moving on in your life, I can highly recommend Paul's Cancer Support Centre on York Road in Battersea. It offers all sorts of counselling, relaxation and other therapies for patients and carers.

They are amazing! Speaking from personal experience here.

Hiya - I remember you at diagnosis - glad all is good - I'm a year and a bit post chemo and hair is going towards what it used to be (via a MASSIVE "chemo curl" stage where I had a massive afro over the summer!)

But, I went straight back to using herbal essences and the dry stage only lasted a short time while it was curly, once the curls were cut off, I am left with normal hair so wanted to say don't think your previous hair might not appear once the first growth is cut off!

But, secondly, wanted to say www.notanotherbunchofflowers.com - I used to work with the girl who runs / set it up after her own chemo and maybe some of the products on here might help - I haven't checked through what she has as its mostly for during chemo, but just in case!!

Hi although I haven't been through chemo I have very thin hair and this shampoo has really given me a better overall head of hair. It's not breaking the bank and claims to be natural. It has no chemically smell so I really rate it.
"Naturvital" shampoo! Don't bother with the conditioner.

Hi Supergirl. I just finished chemo last October and Radiation in November. I have a tiny bit of hair now and I use this stuff:

I researched a bunch of different things and this one was supposed to be good. Hope you're doing well! x
