Couples counselling

Postby britchick » Fri Jan 12, 2018 12:23 pm

Can anyone recommend a good therapist/counselling service for couples? We considered Relate but have heard varied reports about counselors.

Ideally looking for someone with a practice in Nappy Valley as we'd have to attend
appointments.

I don't know enough about counselling to know what type of practice we're looking for (eg psychotherapy, cognitive therapy) but we're finding after many years of marriage + children we have little in common and not really connected and don't know if best to carry on.

Any recommendations appreciated.

Hi
I don't know if they do couples therapy but I've heard good things about the Fernwood Clinic in Balham

http://www.fernwoodclinic.co.uk/

if they can't help then I am sure they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

good luck

Try Anna Kingsley from Kinsley Counseling. She is a qualified, experienced relationship counsellor and psychosexual therapist working in a private practice in Wimbledon Village. Trained and worked in the Tavistock Centre as well.

Her website is: http://www.kingsleycounselling.com

Hope this helps. :)

Hi britchick

I would be very wary of any therapist/counselling service for couples... I have had personal experience of 6 and left each in despair. Seems that the trend is to go over and over 'problems', digging around for more where they didn't exist in the first place and with hindsight discovered that their overall rate of 'success' is negligible and then written off as if the couple were beyond help anyway!

If you are looking for help in saving your marriage then in the first instance I suggest grab yourself a copy of 'The Relationship Handbook' by Dr George Pransky. Read it with an open mind. I have a friend that I have been pointing towards this book for the past 3 years whilst she frantically spent loads of money on a whole 'marriage programme' which left her spinning with more 'problems' than she started with. Finally, she heard me mention the book and got a copy. Within 24 hours she contacted me to say she had read it once front to back, second time back to front, was feeling lighter, calmer and full of hope. There had already been a shift in her relationship with her husband too. This is not an unusual response to all those that I know to have read it, and those that I don't know too!

I am happy to talk.

Kind regards...

Try The Couple Coach: http://www.thecouplescoach.co.uk/

She has posted responses on here in the past and I’ve always found them insightful and helpful.

Annabel, thank you for mentioning us.

Yes we do offer support for couples at Fernwood and our Clinical Psychologists have worked with many local families. We have just had a new appointment become free on Thursday evenings, so please feel free to give us a call if you would like more details about how we work.

Best wishes

Ana

Hi britchick,
The two sites below are reliable for searching for counsellors - I have done a couple of example searches for couples therapists based on Balham and Clapham Junction, but you can select your own filters.

Counselling Directory http://www.counselling-directory.org.uk ... 1&uqs=1199

BACP http://www.itsgoodtotalk.org.uk/therapi ... ll/5/miles

Therapists pay to advertise on these sites. You could also try googling of course.

I'd pick a shortlist of say 3 and contact each for a chat on the phone to see if they sound right for you.

Good luck.

Hello, I am an experienced psychotherapist and couples therapist based in Clapham.I am relaxed and approachable with 25 years experience helping couples to communicate better. I specialise in coming up with solutions to relational difficulties and finding ways to resolve the sedimentations of resentment that often seem get in the way of the good life as a couple. I like to get to the point and figure out what needs to happen in each specific situation without applying one size fits all solutions .Please contact if you would like to know more, James Mann, jmann88@btinternet.com
