Suggest you contact Northcote Music in Northcote Road - they will be able to help.  Also a if you 9 year old has a flute teacher, then he should be to help too.  It may be better to hire rather than buy to start with to see if it is a ong term interest.

That's a good idea. She has been allowed to borrow the school's flute over half term to practice getting a sound out. But the next to step would be to buy or hire one. Daughter is keen to learn something other than piano but I agree I should only buy of she is committed. Will visit Northcote Music shop. Thank you

Just Flutes in Croydon is well worth a visit if you have time over half term. They are very friendly and knowledgeable and have a wide range in stock. They operate a rental scheme too.

Hi Star, so my daughter had a free year at school playing the french horn and wanted to continue but like your daughter is already doing piano, and horns are also ridiculously expensive. I found a brand called Elkhart and spoke with her music teacher at school. Although he said you have to beware of cheaper brands of instruments who fit cheap Chinese parts together, he highly recommended this brand as being affordable for young students. I just checked my go to website gear4music and they do a selection of Elkhart flutes on there. I spoke with Northcote music and as much as I love them, he wanted to sell me a horn for well over a grand and I ended up getting an Elkhart one for 300 and it is great, perfect for what she needs. Maybe see if you can speak to someone who knows about music about this brand for flutes also. Good luck, the cost of instruments and lessons kill me!

My daughter has a Jupiter 700 which I bought on eBay for £106. They are about £350 new. It produces a wonderful sound. And I can tell you that since she's got her own flute (which makes a really good sound) she has progressed rapidly. The school flute was a Nuvo and she struggled to play tunes and almost gave up.

Wow, thank you for the advice. I will make a note of those makes. Definitely can't spend too much but at the same time would like to know it's a good one which makes a lovely sound.

Just to add, we have decided to go for a curved Yamaha/ Pearl flute from Just Flutes and will rent it for a few months before we buy, or may buy a regular flute thereafter. They are brand new to rent.

Thank you for your advice everyone.
