Hi
I am looking for a marriage counsellor who’s more like a life coach who can give practical advice and tips on how to manage a difficult marriage. My husband is highly argumentative, hates communicating and very private and would never go to a counsellor. I believe very strongly (having tried for years) that he will never change so instead I need to learn the skills to manage to diffuse arguments etc. I also strongly believe work stress is a lot to blame but am determined to make the marriage work as I know he loves me and we have two lovely children. Can anyone recommend someone?

Ferndale in Balham are OK.

I've heard people rave about them and others less positive.

The main problem I think in these sort of situations (and this is what happened to my father) is that he just didn't think the counsellors were particularly smart or worthy of his attention and that made it very difficult.

Marriage Counsellors usually work with couples but since this is off the table you just need individual therapy. Happy to chat to you about this (I am a Counsellor to individuals and couples) if you want. PM me and I can probably point you in the right direction. There are lots of lovely local therapists around. It’s just about finding one that suits.

I am a family lawyer and agree with the suggestion about finding a counsellor that suits. Try interviewing a few to see who you feel you can work with.

Just to add to the recommendations - as Kim says above you may need to try a few to see which works best for YOU but I can recommend Madelon - a few months ago i was also after coping strategies to help defuse situations at home (stress and arguments) and these certainly have helped improve the situation even with only one side going for counselling https://madelontreneman.co.uk/
