How do I get my overweight partner to lose weight?

Postby handbagsatdawn » Fri Jun 21, 2019 4:31 pm

My long term partner has gained a lot of weight over the last couple of years. He has a sedentary City job with some business lunches but has stopped exercising and seems not to be so bothered about his appearance or importantly about his health. I am concerned about both. I have tried to be encouraging, let's both eat healthily, do some exercise together, I suggested cycling with the kids. I even suggested that we treated ourselves and went on one of those Body Holidays. I am slightly worried that there is something else going on, maybe depression or unhappiness but to be honest I am worried I will soon start to find him unattractive. Is this just a middle aged thing? Not really sure what to do next?

I think it sounds like there is something else going on here. Probably a mid life crisis of some sorts. We seem to have so many unhappy dads in our circle at the moment. Mostly hating their jobs and only seeing another 20 years of the same ahead. I would keep trying on the joint effort suggestion. I had a work colleague a few years ago who managed to get her husband to lose quite a bit of weight without him realising he was doing it though portion control. Sounds too simple to be true but it worked wonders. If you do most of the cooking you could maybe try this approach? Good luck

Agree there is probably an underlying issue. My husband’s waistline also reflected a surfeit of City lunches for the best part of 20 years and he developed high blood pressure. But confronting it head on made him defensive and resort to ‘secret stuffing’. I found it was best to approach it as a health and happiness issue rather than just focus on weight and appearance. What would help put him in a better frame of mind? What small changes in eating habits can you make that he would accept? A long term, flexible strategy and lots of patience are required. But don’t give up!

Thank you both so much. I think that I might sign up to Hello Fresh so that we are eating more healthily and no doubt more controlled. We haven't booked a holiday yet so I might change from our normal villa routine and try somewhere with activities.

"Well, I think the best you can do in this case is to let him choose between living with you and caring about himself or without you."

Can you even imagine if someone posted this advice to a man - threaten to leave your wife if she doesn't get fit enough for your liking?  Luckily that user is just a spammer trying to sell some magic beans so please ignore the whole post.

Kick the Fat is a weight loss football league in Wandsworth. It is a new scheme and the second league has just started, full details are here: www.enablelc.org/kickthefat
The league takes place at Furzedown Recreation Centre, SW17 9BP on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Kick the Fat is perfect for all abilities and fitness even if you haven’t played football for a long time and has been a huge success for my husband!

You don’t have to play every week as even non-playing team mates can still lose weight and contribute to the score. The league is only for people with a BMI 30+
Enable Leisure & Sport: 020 3959 0030 or email.
