Please don't go to any place that uses a gun for piercing. The gun is plastic and cannot be sterilized. You need to go to a reputable piercer who uses a needle. Less chances of trauma or long term damage to the ears. Unfortunately I don't know any piercers in Balham or Wandsworth but please don't go to Claire's Accessories.

I got a rook piercing done at Kinky Ink in battersea rise. They were lovely, super professional and use high quality jewellery. Thinking about going back to get a second set of love piercings.

I also got a helix piercing done at Maria Tash in liberty a couple of years ago. Nice experience but eye wateringly expensive and the piercing artists were no better than the guys at Kinky Ink!!

The one in Topshop Oxford Circus is great - several friends recommended to us. It's scrupulously hygenic, nice rooms and good choice of products. I too was warned off Claires and I'm too squeamish to do the Maria Tash method, but bought several of her gorge-eoso earrings once I could take out the original ones.

My daughter is going to Maria Tash at Liberty on Thursday so i’ll let you know how it goes.

(Chose MT as it’s needle, not gun so less pain and less damage to the ear.)

Lots of tattooist and piercing studios won’t do under 16/18 so if you look into Kinky Ink and it’s for your child/teenage check their age restrictions first.

My daughter and her friends when to KD tattoo & piercing near Tooting market. It’s on top of a phone accessories shop and doesn’t look like much but they have a proper piercing guy, everything is nice and clean and they had a good selection of earrings. He uses a gun for earlobes, needles for everything else. It’s £10 per ear if under 16.

Questions like this always amuse me. We are about twenty minutes from the centre of one of the greatest cities in the world so why, when it’s something like this which is a one-off, do you just think of doing it locally? My daughter and most of her friends had theirs done in Harrods. It was great and they treated her really well. I had my ears pierced about twenty years ago in some quite cheap place. One of my ears took ages to heal and it’s never been quite right. I’d suggest you spend a bit more on going somewhere good.

I have multiple piercings in my ears and across my body. I got the first set in my ear lobe at 5 in Claire's accessories near my nans and never had any problems. Next, aged 17 I got the top of my ear pierced. As it is cartilage they used a needle but I got it done at a professional place in Whitby. Again, no problems. Next was the 2nd set in my lobes aged 18. They used a gun in Claire's accessories. Still no problems. Again, the same with my 3rd set all though it took my mum 3 weeks to notice that as I got it done in my lunch break at college. Got a 4th one just above the ear lobe and due to being cartilage couldn't get both sides done at once. Still no problems. Went and got the sister piercing in my right ear at Kinky Ink at Clapham Junction. That is the only piercing I have had problems with. They never gave me cleaning advice so it was a good job I've had a few piercings in the past so know what to do. They also used the wrong gloves on me which probably added to the healing process and they actually did it too far back. And they are meant to be professionals.

I don't get why people immediately bad mouth Claire's accessories piercings, I also got my nose done in the Romford one (again, no problems) most of my friends got their first ever piercings in Claire's and had no problems with them so what has changed since the mid to late 90s to now? Health and safety has improved so surely it is better to go to Claire's now than it was when I was 5.

Going to Harrods to get your ears pierced might be the most Nappy Valley thing ever!

Maria Tash in both Liberty and Harrods is out of stock of the plain, no stone earrings for the foreseeable future. My daughter was so disappointed having waited for a month for the appt. I was also very disappointed that they hadn’t warned me beforehand. The cheapest pair of earrings they could pierce with on the day were £500!

Luckily Dandelion Wellness in Holborn came to the rescue at the last minute and pierced her ears with a needle, beautiful little earrings, healed straight away, plenty of aftercare advice and piercing cleaning products to go home with. Highly recommend.
