Examples of crimes in our local shopping areas

Postby Annabel (admin) » Sun Jan 05, 2020 1:16 pm

Anthony Laban is Chair of  BID (Battersea Improvement District for Clapham Junction).

Many of you will know him as the owner of Mint Hair London and Anthony Laban Barbershop in Northcote Road and Anthony Laban Home in Bellevue Road.

BID represents many of our local and popular shopping areas including St. John’s Hill, Battersea Arts Centre and Northcote Road.

Pre Xmas there were several posts on the site referencing increased crimes in these local shopping areas.

Anthony is very soon to have a meeting with the police, local MP's and representatives of these areas.

To help make the meeting as productive as possible he would like specific details of any unreported incidents that you know of ideally dates and times.

If you could either post these on this thread or email him on anthonylaban@hotmail.com as soon as possible.

His aim: to make our shopping areas safer for all.

Many thanks for reading.

My 15 year old son has been mugged twice in the last 10 days
Once on Wandsworth Common on a Saturday evening, which has been reported to the police
The second, and more worrying (not that the other is not), started off at 7pm on Wednesday evening on Northcote Road. The whole event journeyed from half way down Northcote Road, up Battersea Rise, across Eccles Road, through the Asda car park ending in the little park next to Asda. My son has been threatened with follow up stabbing if he goes to the police.

So sorry to hear this Teenmum.

Some year 8 boys were mugged on St John’s Hill on Friday afternoon. It went quieter for a bit since the high number of attacks in Oct but seems to be on the increase again. I worry about my kids coming home every day. I thought sticking to roads like Northcote would make them safer. This is really worrying.

I hope he and you are bearing up ok x

Hi All
Just to say that there is often someone in the Flight Centre shop on Northcote Road after hours so please if any of your children are feeling threatened they are welcome to knock on our doors anytime and we can give them safe haven.  So sorry this is happening in our area.

My friend (on his bike) helped a student after she had been mugged on Saturday 11th around 8pm on Trinity rd near Tooting Bec station. I’m not sure if she reported the incident. The guy was after her apple air headphones. He had a knife.

I am not sure whether it is the result of cuts in police numbers or the priorities of the police, but I see no police in my area.  Years ago we regularly saw our community support officer walking around.  The last time I saw any police, other than those screaming around in cars, was a couple standing and chatting at the Grant Road exit to Clapham Junction.

If the police really wanted to cut crime they must make themselves more readily available - that is something that Robert Mark found when he ran the Met in the '70s.  The safer neighbourhood meetings in my area seem to have stopped - or, at least, I no longer seem to get notification of them and my attempts to get more people invited fell on deaf ears.

On another point, the way in which education has been fragmented, via the academies programme, has led to thousands of children of school age having no school to go to because they have been "off rolled" (this is not the same as the formal exclusion process).  The more the system is fragmented and taken away from the oversight of a local authority, the harder it has been to track children.  This means that children are open to being used by gangs.

The police have had their numbers and funding cut, and all the PCSOs in London were cut by 68% (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... years.html). So it isn't much of a surprise that you don't see them on the street.

Obviously they have also closed many local police stations.

Young people are probably amongst the most vulnerable in these situations, and they need ways to deal with the approaches and defending themselves. It is very concerning that the incident above went on for some time, and no one intervened. But I would also say that youngsters need to be educated on where to seek help - ie walk into a shop and ask for help.

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts. We are fine though certainly more aware of our surroundings when we are on the move.
Thank you also for savehaven offers, this is great to know.
We reported the second mugging this week and the police were very attentive and followed the cctv leads as far as they could (there was no other evidence). There are cctv cameras the full length on Northcote Road and Battersea Rise, and a police officer spent the whole day yesterday reviewing the footage. Shockingly, the quality of the footage was so poor across all of the available cameras was so poor, not a single image of either my son and his mates or the muggers (even though they rode along Northcote Road before the event) was available.
That is something the council can talk to, as I understand it. They are council cctv cameras pointing to the middle of the road never to the pavements. It’s such a shame that scarce police resource are not even able to progress their investigations because cctv cameras are not good enough!
